Then make a new game! Seriously.
I can understand if they do, in fact, change tons, but like you said, there's still plenty of room for improvement while still adhering to the core of Thief.
We've all been playing Thief for 13 years now. We have three sequels, a spinoff in TDM, and a decades worth of quality FMs to fall back on with more on the way. In my opinion, if you want classic Thief, you've got enough to last you a lifetime.
This is why I welcome a good bit of change to the series. We've got more than enough Thief as per the old definition. I think it's time someone takes the central ideas of what makes Thief Thief and experiments with them a bit. As long as they're not trying to make a linear action game out of the series that only plays lip services to the old titles (and from what we've heard, they're not), then I say go to town. If it's 98% sneaking based in non linear environments with multiple ways to approach an objective and atmosphere you can cut with a knife, then I'm good. If it ends up sucking (either to us or in general), I've still got FMs I've yet to play that'll give me my Thief fix and then some.
Experimentation? Sure! Heap it on!

Considering a 3rd person action game with a sneak mode didn't pass muster, you should be glad they spent all that time experimenting.
Experimenting is great...just not on things that never should be considered for a THIEF game...See the difference?

I'm not assuming the worst...just going on the information that has been given.

Right!...Make a new IP!

There is plenty of room for improvement and growth within what made Thief great. It can have improved visuals, sound, animations and AI without being a Thief 2 clone / Expansion.
Right again!...Being true to the core design of a THIEF game doesn't mean "T2 clone with better graphics"...I would really like to see some more understanding of this, so the ignorant, unfair pigeon-holing can be minimized.

For them to spend that long trying to think their way out of the corner they had put themselves in by taking on Thief in the first place clearly indicates they really had no intention of making a Thief game at all. Their intention was to see how much Thief they needed to retain to make a game that was just Thiefy enough, and then jazz it up with more action / flashy bits.
Precisely!...and this produced a misguided and failed path, due to erroneous thinking.

But you kind of are assuming the worst, Vae. You see that they experimented with some Assassians Creed style gameplay, and immediately think they don't want to make a Thief game, but they're pigeonholed into making one becuase they chose that name.
...like that would stop them from making Assassians Creed V with Thief characters if that's what they wanted to do.
The way I see it, I don't want New Thief to be Assassians Creed. But I could see a Thief game incorporating some of that game's better elements into Thief's core. I don't want it to be Mirror's Edge, either. But...same thing. Experimenting with other gameplay features isn't detrimental to what Thief is. If it's done well, then they've expanded and improved upon that core, maybe in ways you couldn't have imagined previously. If it's done badly, then...hey, they're dumb. But just because they are stretching their wings a bit and looking at some modern titles for inspiration doesn't mean they don't "get" Thief. They just don't want to make Thief 2.5.

Perhaps if they spent less money hiring top fashion designers to create real world replicas of their in game costumes, and focused on making good games, they wouldn't be losing so much.
Yeah, they did that not just with the new Thief, but with Final Fantasy:Versus too. Those costumes even had real diamonds strapped onto them - something that was actually made fun off in Japan (I think someone from Konami actually commented on this).
Squeenix... they kinda sucked for the past decade, but still published some great games. Dragon Quest 8 and 9 were nice, I really liked Final Fantasy 12 and absolutely loved Nier and DX:HR.
I hope this won't have a tremendous impact on the new Thief game or the recently announced Drakengard 3.

What you aren't understanding is the desire to head-off the worst, as well as the worse, and the lesser evils, as much as possible,
not assumption and resignation that it's already here, even though modern gaming shows us it is here, it is a selling point, it is a driving motive, whether it gets toned down in Thief or not. When a hardcore gamer who plays modern games doesn't want to see common modern gaming design philosophy getting put into a Thief game, the perspective they have isn't anything you keep assuming hyperbolically. If you understood the truth of it, you'd relax a bit. Somewhat. But I dunno.
We aren't on the team, so we do have to be assertive, especially to punch through the noise of misunderstanding. We don't want an expansion pack, and we've been hearing that form your chosen camp for several years, now. It never began to touch on the truth, and it won't change anything now, but it is a convenient distraction, 'cause it's apparently the remaining salvo you got.

I've a great idea for a new stealth game.
Its set in a pre-industrial Europe era, and is a stealth game where you hide in the shadows. It all makes sense because the era lends itself to low lighting at night due to a lack of widespread electricity usage (although there will be some) and flame based light sources, some of which can be put out with water.

Yes, I and others often act preemptively in this regard...a point of fact that is frequently misunderstood, due to false preconceptions.

The attitude is written into the DNA, by this point. Matter-of-fact statements are read as with many exclamation points and hysteria, and common figures of speech are taken literally.

This is the guy they brought in as the new producer (oh, something went awry, it did). The one that supposedly finally helped them "find
focus"...

I guess that's, as you say,
your opinion then on what
we've got for
me. Not mine. I would like Thief to continue to be the best game going. I want it alive and well. And so I'm going to pay attention when I hear it is being rebooted for the ConsoleGen, when I hear the crunch of bone-snapping chain-attacks, when I hear them toning down the magical, when I see that Garrett is being Jokered.
I want whoever has Thief to want to play Thief.
I want whoever owns and controls Thief to want to keep Thief Thief.
