Ugh. I've only been awake 10 minutes, I'm not up for the usual Thiefgen nonsense. I'll come back later when I'm more able to accurately interpret smug posts like NH's.

... That they hired a famous fashion designer to design Garrett's outfit for T4 and made a real world replica of it maybe. And then that's a reference to the fact that SE has a reputation for style & aesthetics over substance & gameplay in games, cf. the trend in Japanese gaming generally.

It's a bit hyperbole & generalization, sure (it's not like the outfit itself bankrupted them)
No, it definitely wouldn't have bankrupted them. lol Yet, what we've seen with EM's Thief is part of the whole. They spent over 3 years in pre-production trying to figure out what game they were making in an already established series. Seriously? How many other games under Square's banner have squandered as much time and money? Keep it small, tight, focused and fun.

It's not difficult to figure out, you just need to (

Which is absolutely ridiculous...It's unbelievable that they would squander so much time with such nonsense.

Yeah! It's not their place to experiment with stealth gameplay and try to do something new!
Idiots! We don't want new! New is for console kiddies and casuals! What we want is a Thief 2 expansion pack with slightly prettier graphics and nothing more. Save your good ideas for other games and give us what we're already used to!

There are ways to expand and evolve a THIEF game, and there are ways not to...
and messing around for years with the silly idea of a 3rd-person action game with a "sneak mode" is not one of them.

To be fair, I honestly can't see how 3 years pre-production is a better recipe for innovation than getting games made and out the door faster and cheaper and with less institution toppling financial risk.
At least, it didn't obviously work out that way for Duke Nukem.

I mean they could've just said screw it and given us Assassians Thief 5 with Garrett the Kill King 2 years ago. Instead, they spent time playing around and experimenting, and maybe...just maybe...they came up with something interesting and new while still remaining at least somewhat faithful to the originals.
I mean you don't have to assume the worst about everything you hear coming out of EM. They're not
complete idiots.

Three years is kind of a long time to spend goofing around, I'll admit. But that doesn't necessarily mean it'll end up being a completely mismanaged, unfocused mess like DNF.
It means...well...I dunno what it means. It's one of those things we won't be able to see the fruits of until it's nearing release.

Hopefully you're joking, because I would expect better from you than that Renz. There is plenty of room for improvement and growth within what made Thief great. It can have improved visuals, sound, animations and AI without being a Thief 2 clone / Expansion. For them to spend that long trying to think their way out of the corner they had put themselves in by taking on Thief in the first place clearly indicates they really had no intention of making a Thief game at all. Their intention was to see how much Thief they needed to retain to make a game that was just Thiefy enough, and then jazz it up with more action / flashy bits.
I've just begun playing Dishonored. From what I've seen of it so far, it seems as if the Teef Team had no vision and kept looking 'outside' to find a direction...and that direction now appears to be Dishonored.
Thief is the kind of game that if you aren't in love with it, you won't capture it. You may make a great game, but it doesn't mean there is life in it. Everyone has to be on board with what made it great.
