I also found the press button X to choose ending X mechanic extremely flat. Mass Effect also came to my mind about how to do it right. Although DX1 also ended the same way, your decisions through out the game doesn't necessarily affect the ending, except maybe a couple lines of soliloquy from Jensen in the epilogue (I would assume based on what he said in my playthrough).
The boss battles bugged me a bit. Especially with Jaron. I had gone to the limb clinic so my augs wouldn't work and my vision was all messed up. That was a real load, reload, reload reload / qucksave abuse moment for me. Although killing the 2nd boss wasn't as bad for me as others said it had been for them. I'd just typhoon her when she came to do the same to me and then strafe circles around her pumping my heavy rifle into her face. Did that twice and she was dead.
The most amusing part for me was the idea that Taggart was such an influential member of the illuminati. Is there really still that much paranoia about mormons secretly wanting to rule the whole world? Does anybody remember the Doom novels? LOL
Sarif is a whiney bitch btw.
A few things irked me. like the ducts going everywhere. Not very subtle. But i enjoyed the game a lot. Time to move on for awhile and I'll go back and replay it and probably be a complete asshole and kill everyone that gets in my way, siding with a strong Sarif ending.
First I'll finish up with my playthrough of DX and IW. and maybe to buy dead island, not sure yet.
It was fun Eidos, I hope your next game is something completely different with no "spiritual successor" BS. Be original and put as much or more polish into the next one.
EDIT: Oh.. almost forgot. did anybody else catch this?

DXHR is really cool - but for the ppl who loved SS2, Thief 1/2, DX1 I don't think, this can be the sequel they wished for.
dont speak for me.
im one of the people on the planet that will vehemently defend SS2 as the best game of all time with DX1 following close in its footsteps yet i love DXHR. HR is a fantastic game.
can i get a real explanation regarding the complaints about HR? srsly guys. complaining about boss fights? wtf is wrong with boss fights? did you just want to knock out infantry for 20 hours to advance the story? i cant fathom how bosses is a point of criticism let alone so often mentioned as a "negative", even in major gaming publications.
and about the augs not being choice driven - that makes perfect sense to me because youre a mech aug. youre not programming little machines in your body to do one thing but not another. your boss put every one of those augs on your list in your body and the game says in plain terms they are dormant to prevent brain explosions... or something.
ive played the game through twice. this is a game i will definitely go platinum on after taking a break on dead island.

I love Thief 1/2, SS2, and DX, I played them all when they came out. And I absolutely love DX:HR. Actually I can't believe that NPCs not doing anything specific for one hour in Limb clinic can ruin sb's game experience. With that level of nitpicking, when was the last time you actually relaxed and enjoyed ANYTHING in your life?
Anyway, I liked most of what game had to offer. I didn't like bossfights that much, but even then, without any lethal firepower in my inventory, the game provided me with proper means to finish the job.
I was impressed that the game pays a proper homage to DX legacy and shows that you can really build a bridge between PC and console audiences (unlike DX:IW). Actually DX:HR raises the bar, when comes to that.
What was most important for me, while DX:HR is a proper tribute to DX, it's actually the opposite when it comes to the storyline. Conspiracies and Illuminati (which are mentioned relatively late in the game) are mostly in the background. There's more personal dimension: conversations with NPCs, where we can express our own take on augmentations, related ethical problems, dividing people into groups of better and worse, etc. It's not that much about revolution of humans, but (r)evolution of what it means to be human, as experienced by us and Adam during the game.
I really liked that, until the very end, I was not a chosen one to save the world, and even after that it was more like the beginning, "I never asked for this". And I absolutely loved how Eidos Montreal went ahead with the fourth and probably most mature ending. While it was of course a bit pompous speech, still it felt right.

Great post, I second that.
TTLG community has always been picky but within limits. I call that good taste.
But this kind of nitpicking in the first fucking good game since Deus Ex Visible Crap is almost ungreatful. I won't tell you how I call it.
We've got a 2011 game that:
1) is multiplatform, yet it RESPECTS PC
2) respects DX traditions: tons of little details.
3) allows you to play it intelligently by giving you the option to turn those stupid "GO THERE" aids off
4) comes from EIDOS (no less) that put 4 fucking years of development to give you a 40+ hour of high quality gameplay (and besides the fact that it's expected from a DX game, how many games of the last 10 years you can count that offer you that much?)
Yeah, with all those point in mind I wonder WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT? :) This game is a godsend. It's not the best DX game and there will be never any such game just because DX WAS THE FIRST, period. And it was full of gameplay weaknesses as well but we didn't notice it... I'm not sure why, maybe because we didn't define them as such, they become weaknesses today...
Anyway, I was almost in tears when I clocked around 20 hours of the game and found out I'm still at half way.

Yeah, but DX1 made you a part of the endings. You met with the different factions. They described their goals in detail and allowed you to give feedback. Then once you picked an ending, you had to carry out several tasks to achieve that outcome, all the while being threatened by the opposing factions.
In DXHR, you just press a lame button. Lame.
june gloom on 6/9/2011 at 08:30
What the- have you actually played DX1 at all in the last 10 years? With the exception of carrying out some tasks, nearly everything you said is untrue.
Here's how it boils down:
Destroy the facility, because letting it sit would just perpetuate the problem. LET'S HAVE A NEW DARK AGE AND SATISFY ALL THE HAIRY NECKBEARDS WHO THINK ANARCHY ISN'T 7TH GRADE GYM CLASS ON A WIDER SCALE
Kill Bob Page, maintain the status quo and join Everett BECAUSE IT'S BETTER TO REIGN IN HELL
Join with Helios, because HELIOS KNOWS BEST BECAUSE IT'S COMPLETELY IMPERSONAL BUT WAIT IT NEEDS YOU TO TELL IT WHAT PEOPLE WANT
AND WHAT DOES JC DENTON SAY TO ALL OF THESE?
"I'll think about it."
So then you go do whatever.
NO WAIT PAGE WILL DIE WHEN YOU BLOW UP THE FACILITY
NO WAIT PAGE WANTS HELIOS ALL FOR HIMSELF
NO WAIT WE CAN RULE TOGETHERRRRR DENTON!!!!!!!!!!!
but nothing happens
you shoot a few things and pres butan and CUE CUTSCENE
THE END
SEE YOU NEXT MISSION!!

...
and yet you have to admit, that this was cool back then all this years ago. i also would like to know what new things dxhr has achieved compared to dx1. dx1 was groundbreaking, dx3 is not, i think that's what makes some fans sad.
june gloom on 6/9/2011 at 10:49
Except if it was groundbreaking, those same fans would be furious because how dare they change the formula. Nevermind that they're furious anyway because it's almost exactly the same fucking game, they've just forgotten the silly bullshit that was in DX1 that got translated over to DX3.
Jason Moyer on 6/9/2011 at 10:56
Deth have you finished HR yet? Because while you're right about the ending of DX being less great than people make it out to be, the ending of DXHR is the most contrived bullshit ever. It is literally "here are 4 buttons, press one of them". That's not some fanwank hyperbole, it's literally what the ending is.
Also, wallcloud, you do get to talk to all of the major players in the final mission, where they try to sway you to their cause and you give them feedback. I'm assuming you did the optional "meet Taggart" and "meet Sarif" objectives?

i for my part aren't furious, but i am also a little disappointed in dxhr, i can't deny that. i would have hoped they would try to put things to the next level...
