To all on this thread, I think each of us knows which ending is the correct, developer-chosen one: Endgame4. Once you master its subliminal statements, you will behold the truth of Deus Ex...

Agh! Fine. Spin your elaborate world destruction fantasies, and shove a computer into your head, becoming the most evil figure in world history, to combat it. That worked real well for the hero from Diablo.

That worked real well for the hero from Diablo. Hey all I'm saying is that in a world which was already on the brink of economic and social collapse the sudden destruction of all communication and currency, as well as a total power outage, might do a bit of damage.
You say all that is taken out is the Internet, and that is true. But it is true in the same way that it is true that all that is wrong with someone is they got cut if they are hemophilic and they will bleed to death from it.
The social structure of the world was already crumbling. The truckers were already striking. The people were already starving. The countries were already dissolving.
Why must you insist that total collapse is a fantasy if those are initial conditions and the next addition to the equation is the most complete economic collapse ever, more than that the most complete economic collapse possible?
Remember that it took far less to cause the first Dark Age. The first Dark Age was caused by a few measly civil wars and the destruction of the governmental center and communications hub. That was nothing compared to the civil wars we hear about in Deus Ex and the destruction of Aquinas. Rome could be easily bypassed, the destruction of that hub was from a practical standpoint no big deal, yet communication still failed. The lack in communication resulted in the inability to make any organized attempt to pull together the shattered empire, the civil wars increased, society was set back many centuries, and indoor plumbing became a thing of the past.
The good news is that the New Dark Age ending in Deus Ex will likely not mean an end to indoor plumbing, but to say that nothing much happens other then the end of the net is about as off as you can be.
Before someone makes a fool of themselves, yes the Ancient Romans did have indoor plumbing and their technological feats are still quite good (there are major roads still in use created by them, do you think your local roadways will last even a single thousand years? What about the ones that span a country or two?)
So you base you social theory on a computer game from 1996? Perhaps you don't go back far enough, maybe the solution to the world's problems could be found in Tetris. After all if Diablo can teach you the appropriate way to end a game in which the world is in your hands, it must be either tetris or pong that teaches you what to do if the world really is in your hands.
