Here is what I have so far figured out about the disapearance of the Dwarves.
The Dwarves dug into the deep bowels of Tamriel, where they happened across the Heart of Lorkhan. A Dwarven scientist called Kangrenac devised tools to access the Hearts great power. He ended up giving his entire race Immortality. The dwarves could still die, but if they were never wounded or diseased they could live forever. Then war broke out The Dwemer and some other house fought against the rest of the Dunmer (Chimer). Vivec, Almalexia, and another soon to be god, entered the Red Mountain Citadel while most of the Dwarves had been drawn out into the open in the great epic battle.
I'll finish the rest later, it's 3:00 AM :bored: And damned if I can remember it all right now. Not to mention it's bloody hot down here! :erg:
-Edit- Oh, and If you have any question about the dwarves-go right ahead and ask me, I'll answer to the best of my abilities. -Edit-
Edit:Added the sentence above this one. (Or ask me Any question, I like to answer questions.)
I have governed the unwilling. I have walked the edge of the Abyss.
I've only ever seen a dwarf ghost but the spectre didn't look very 'dwarf' like in fact it was quite tall although it did seem to have a large beard. I know there is a dwarf at Tel Fyr but I'm not going there for some time yet so i just wondered what dwarfs look like in Morrowind?
Also i believe Morrowind suggests that once a very long time ago men and mer (elves?) had the same decedents but what about the dwarfs - where did they come from?
Cheers

Hmmm...this is also spoiler-tastic, but...
I was wandering the Sixth House stronghold that Sul-Whatisface sends you on in order to get the instructions for the Third Trial, and I remember coming across one of the 'Dagoth Jimbob' priests. Except...he looked like a dwarf. He attacked me without me getting the chance to talk to him. I don't know anything about him or why he's different. I think he's an Ash Vampire from poking around the editor. But he definitely looked kind of Dwarven (well, he had a beard at any rate ;)).
So, why do ash vampires look like Dwarves? Or do the not, and I'm just crazy?
Forsythe on 22/7/2002 at 18:08
MONB: Yup, that's an Ash Vampire. As to why it looks like a Dwarf, good question, I never noticed that before. They've been around since before the Dwarves vanished though, so maybe they just like the look? ;)
Slith: Not bad, here's a few finer points... Kagrenac was tring to make a god (named Nubidium [sp?]) for the Dwarves, but he hadn't told his king what he was up to. Nerevar was told what Kagrenac was up to and believed it blasphemous ("defiling" the heart of the god who gave life to the world), so he threatened the Dwarves with war unless Kagrenac was stopped, but the Dwarven king denied everything. The battles began and the Dwarves hired on numerous Nord mercenaries as well as whatever House was on their side; despite this, they were still losing the battle. Kagrenac did his thing out of fearful desperation over the battle's status, not calm and calculated like he'd planned.
Noone really knows what Kagrenac was intending at the end but whatever it was he probably made a mistake, as the Dwarves vanished. Nerevar and Dagoth Ur, bosom buddies as they were, together stormed the suddenly-vacant Red Mountain citadel and captured Kagrenac's fallen tools. Nerevar told Dagoth Ur to watch them while he fetched his advisors (Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil). Nerevar made them swear not to use the tools and made them swear it by Azura (their Daedra of oaths). He died or was killed shortly thereafer (there's more controversy than fact on this one). Dagoth Ur somehow became tempted or corrupted by the tools and refused to hand them to the trio, who eventually drove him off into the bowels of the citadel.
Of course they broke their oath and made themselves gods, and when they did so Azura showed up and turned them and their entire people purplish-grey (essentially turning the Chimer into Dunmer) as a form of punishment. Vivec the silver-tongued told the Dunmer this was a blessing for unspecified reasons.
Hrm... sorry, I got carried away :p

Holly heavens! you people see this thing asreal life with its hisotry and plot and little secrets.
i'm sure during the playing of the game that everything will point itself out!
whats the point of telling all you know what happened to them here?
its not essential to solving a quest or so.

Yeah, but it's fun to have a community to talk to-I mean if your dinner included a screaming fish and flying eggs :wot: , I'm sure you'd talk to people about it. Just consider it useless gossip if you want. :weird:
Now, what made me beleive that the Cove- errr, Dwarves dissapeared is because of one thing. They were made into Immortals. However, when the Heart was used or whatever-I'm kinda skewtchy on what happenedinside the citedal- The Dwarves Immortality vanished, and Age crept upon them like a striking Viper. They had been ageing well past their normal lifespans, and then suddenly they lost all that immortality, and they crumbled to dust, just like it says in one o those papers in Vivec's Temple. It has a 100 level lock and a rather lethal trap on it, but if your high enough level you could break in and read the Four Pages.
Hrm... would've sworn it said he'd intended for that effect but failed; I'll re-read it to see what you mean when I get home.

Just to clarify a few points:
1. The 'Dwarves', as you call them, are infact Dwemer - which means 'Deep Elves' (Some think it may be 'Smart Elves' instead). They are NOT the D&D short Dwarves with beards and a lust for gold and ale. They are Elves - like the Bosmer, Altmer and Dunmer.
2. The Battle at Red Mountain is sketchy to say the least. Here's a brief summary of events:
- The Dwemer, Chimer and Nords fought in a big battle at Red Mountain.
- Dagoth-Ur knew that the Dwemer had the Heart of Shor(Lorkahn) and told the Nords.
- Shor created a Nord army to attack the Dwemer and Chimer.
- The Nords were led by two Generals: King Wulfharth and Dagoth-Ur.
- During the Battle, the Nords were driven back by a combined Dwemer and Chimer army.
- Nerevar confronted Dumac Dwarf-King about the Heart of Lorkhan and he denied knowing about it. This appears to be true as Kangrenac was the one using Keening and Saunder on the Heart. Kangrenac's ultimate plan was to not only make the Dwemer god-like, but to create their own gods (The Numidium).
- Nerevar didn't believe Dumac and declared war on the Dwemer.
- The Dwemer were tricked into leaving their Red mountain stronghold and most were defeated by the Chimer. Dumac Dwarf-King was slain by Nerevar.
- During this time, Nerevar and Dagoth-Ur (See what I mean about it being hazy... Dagoth-Ur was a Nord General) entered Red Mountain and discovered that Kangrenac was tapping power from the Heart of Lorkhan to make his race immortal or God-like.
- Nerevar and Dagoth-Ur defeated Kangrenac and the Dwemer vanished. No-one is 100% sure exactly what happened to the Dwemer. Some say they became Gods, others say that they lost to power of the heart and this killed them or even the Gods destroyed them for their mis-deeds of trying to become Gods and creating false Gods. At any rate, this even causes the Blight to errupt from Red Mountain.
- Nerevar didn't know what to do with Keening and Saunder, so he told Dagoth-Ur to guard them while he sought counsel from the Tribunal. Nerevar wanted to destroy the tools so they could never be used again.
- Nerevar was told to return the tools to the Tribunals care and he was told that they would not be used.
- Nerevar then dies. Some say he confronted Dagoth-Ur and was killed from his wounds in that battle. Others state that Vivec, Almalexia and Sotha-Sil killed him. Another theory states that he died of his wounds received during his battle with Kangrenac.
- Apon returning to Red Mountain, they discover that Dagoth-Ur will not return the tools, and may have used them on the heart. Others say he found a way to tap the power without the tools, and this drove him insane.
- Dagoth-Ur is driven deep into Red Mountain by either Nerevar or Vivec et al.
- At this point, Nerevar is dead.
- Sotha-Sil studies the tools and discovers what they can do. Vivec, Almalexia and Sotha-Sil go against Nerevar's wishes (and the Tribunal) and use the tools on the heart to become 'Gods'.
- Azura then changed the Chimer into the Dunmer because of what vivec et al. did.
That's basically all I can remember off the top of my head. :D And it's only a summary of what I have read so far (I havn't finished the main quest yet). Any questions? ;)

I see no special reason to use spoiler tags in a thread with *Spoiler* in the title, but that may just be me.
Dagoth Ur was the leader of the at that time Chimer house Dagoth. He trciked the Nords into attacking and to further the ruse he convinced them to let him be a general along with Wulfharth. (from 'Five Songs of King Wulfharth')
