I did some searching on the forums, and there seems to be a bug (or feature) that you can't become arch-mage if you put Trebonius down too early. I saw "duel" in trebonius keywords list, clicked it, and he ended up dead. Now the quests that the other mages can give you seem to give the wrong results. Edwinna is stuck, she starts talking about a new task, but i can't actually get it into my journal. I really wanted to become arch-mage!
Is there any way to fix this?

Spawning a new Trebonius might help you out of this bind, but that's all I can think of. If you're on a PC, let us know and someone will be able to post the full answer (complete with his object ID) for how to do that.

Yep, i'm on the PC. Is it a dangerous operation? (couldn't it screw things up further than it already is?)
