Sorry if this was already discussed, but are there any fan-made missions or mods for any part of Splinter Cell? I found some links to Splinter Cell Editor downloads, but I'm looking for a community first of all.

That is probably a multiplayer map editor (for the versus mode) - there was one for PT and CT if I recall correctly. Otherwise there are no mods for any of them (at least I don't know of any), the single player was always pretty much locked down.

Back in March, we received some distressing news about a delay affecting the release of the Splinter Cell Trilogy for PlayStation 3. Pushed to June from its original March 22nd release date, the Splinter Cell titles left PS3 gamers waiting.
Thankfully, a post on the PlayStation Blog from Ubisoft's PR Coordinator Alex Monney gave us some interesting tidbits about the collection to help pass the time.
As we already knew, the Splinter Cell Trilogy is upscaled to HD and includes Trophy support for all three titles. We also already knew that the Trilogy would be released as a retail disc, but that the games would also be made available individually on the PlayStation Store (just like Ubisoft's previous collection for Prince of Persia).
But now we know that Splinter Cell Trilogy will run in 3D (if you have a television capable of supporting 3D, that is) and each game in the Trilogy has been ported not from the PlayStation 2 versions of the games but rather the PC versions. In a response to a reader inquiry on the blog, Alex Monney noted that Ubisoft "used the PC versions of the games for the trilogy as they provided the best quality." Most interesting.
Also confirmed in the user comments is that all multiplayer functionality has been removed from the Trilogy ports. When asked if multiplayer would be included, Monney answered "unfortunately the answer to this question is no, the online part of the original games won't be included."

Slightly OT: with Conviction having been out for more than a year, what's the final verdict on it? Is it worth playing, or is it so far removed from the giddy heights of Chaos Theory that it's even more frustrating to take on than Double Agent?

More the latter if you're looking for the Chaos Theory formula, I'm afraid. The mark and execute ability is a large sign that pure stealth is more a pleasant memory than any practical objective. (Besides its deployment being completely arbitrary - you 'earn' the ability to mark and execute only after taking someone down in close quarters.)
The predator/prey dynamic is still around, but the lack of out-and-out stealth means the experience devolves into cover-based shootouts far more often than necessary, making it pretty schizophrenic as an experience at the best of times.

what is this "ghosting"?

Completing the game/level with no-one even knowing you were there, and no kills/knockouts, or as close as you can get to that. It's not completely possible in all SC games (1 has at least one required kill for example, and this thread describes some situations where you have really exploit the AI).

So I finally got Splinter Cell Conviction. Passed on it originally as it appeared to be very action-oriented and too unlike classic Splinter Cell. Well, to my surprise, at least the beginning portions of it, are very stealthy. Rather, it's up to you. I don't know if it's possible to ghost this game, as I have been doing a mix of ghosting and stealth killing, but this is a well-done game, very much in the spirit of earlier entries in the series.
And now looks like there will be another game in 2012 or 2013.
