True "wire " is now used and can be had as fine a .00015.
New techniques with glass now allow the reticules to be laser etched to less than the spidersilk or wire. Because it is directly on the glass, it is not subject to temperature change (as wire is) nor to being dislodged a the silk and other substitutes were on ocassion.

I forgot to ask. How many of the ones you own use "hair"?
If they are not from the 1800's I doubt that any do. the first accredited telescopic gun sight was made about 1848 by a man named James from Utica, New York.

I've found beer to be quite effective with cross hair. And drinking in the shower is a bonus.
