I dont think it's the actual storyline from the comics; more like a hybrid of what happens in the previous two films building up to this one. What I want to know though, is if this is going to be the last spiderman movie. A trilogy would set it off nicely and the movie trilogy sequence seems to be getting popular in hollywood now - which is fine by me so long as they're good storytelling.

(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104227) Previous speculation thread on the new Spidey flick.
<strike>I haven't seen the teaser yet, I'll have to wait until a YouTube shows up or until I get home, but</strike> I will say that the introduction of a new character Gwen Stacey for a potential love triangle is redundant if this is the third and
final Spiderman movie since we already had the Peter Parker, Mary Jane and both J.Jameson/H.Osborn love triangles so enough with the fucking triangles already. The only reason I'd welcome this is if the franchise is continuing and
they plan to kill off MJ in this one.
And I hope that is the way they go, for a number of reasons; they've already made this a packed movie with 3 villains (sandman, venom and green goblin II), so in order to actually be effective and not just a movie with underdeveloped characters that hops from setpiece to setpiece with some convoluted villain/hero alignment necessary for the plot to wrap up nicely, I'd appreciate if they could pack a bit of an emotional punch to it. Also, if they take care of at least one or two of those villains, but leave either venom or GG mkII around for another... it raises the stakes again for a fourth outing that could perhaps bring closure to the series.
Either way, I just hope that Raimi and Maguire stay involved. They are integral to the franchise.
update: Saw the trailer, overall I think it looks good, my point above still stands but is perhaps less valid because it doesn't seem like the love triangle is the perspective to take on it but rather the fight between good Parker and evil Parker. Also, did they dye his hair black and set it in a different shed in some of those scenes? If so, uuuuuh, why? Anyway, sandman effect looks nice. I'm glad they didn't give away anything of Venom ... of course, it's my suspicion that Venom is purely going to appear in the final act of the movie, leaving him as the main villain for the subsequent movie.

It looks like the writers threw in as much junk possible and are hoping that the weight of internet speculation will help Spider-Man 3 coalesce into a story.

Well, as a fan, I like the series. I also recognise that if you even so much as tried the 'omnipotent being abducts super heroes for war game' plot in a cinema most of the popcorn crowd would cross their eyes and leave. Rapidly.
And given that Spider-man* has had quite a few costume changes, I don't mind that much, as long as it evokes the idea of the character.
Meh, it's all about getting bums on seats at the end of the day, and faithfulness be damned. I guess I'm just more pragmatic about it.
*And all his clones and non-616 versions, admittedly.

so the symbiote conveniently drops from the sky.
I think it more likely that they'll go the Ultimate route and have it as some terrestrial thingy... although maybe not, given John Jameson being an astronaut.
In summary: I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

My theory was (long before Venom was ever attatched) that it would be created by Curt Conners as some form of experiment to get his arm back & Parker gets hold of it.
