(
http://spiderman.sonypictures.com/) Black Spiderman.
WATE DONT YOU AFROARACHNOMERICAN?! LOL
So I'm not a comic book fan, can someone explain what's going on here?
I've heard the name Venom get touted around. Now I know what Venom looks like and that he's like Spidey's evil doppelganger, but what's the story here? Where's the black spiderman suit come from? Why does Peter wear it?
Apparently Topher Grace is the actor pipped to don the new suit, so it'll be interesting to see Peter fight someone his own age as opposed to middle-aged scientists.
It also appears to be the first Spiderman movie with two active villains - since Thomas Haden Church is going to be playing the Sandman in this one. But then, the last movie left the option open for Green Goblin mark II? Could there be three villains? It's starting to get as crowded as the previous Batman franchise, but let's hope all comparisons end there.
Now there's all sorts of rumours that this is the last Spiderman flick and that Kirsten Dunst has said she wants "Spiderman to die" in order to conclusively finish the series. Now if she's causing the trouble I'm telling Raimi to kill her off and continue, because I'm really enjoying this superhero series. It's fun and action packed without being too silly or plotless, the character development has actually worked and I found myself adoring Spiderman 2 for being a well-rounded movie as well as a blockbuster popcorn flick.
Can't wait for more quips from the man at the Daily Bugle. All looks well for this franchise.
I can only hope that Batman Continues (lollin) arrives in a few years to continue another promising series - early indications are that this is a pretty-definite green light.
I don't hold out much hope for (
http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=22441) X-Men though. Overall I've found the previous films to be lacking and this looks like the last one that deals with the whole ensemble of characters - there's rumours of a Jackman spinoff though, cue echoes of Catwoman!

The black suit is an alien symbiote thing that attatches itself to Mr. Parker and then eventually onto evil rival man, Eddy Brock (aka Venom). I think that's how it goes anyway.

The Venom suit was originally acquired by Spider-Man during the Secret Wars comic series. It turned out to be an alien symbiote that made Spidey's life a WHOLE lot easier... it responded to mental commands and thoughts, it had an infinite supply of webbing built-in somehow, and it could mimic street clothing (way easy to get into costume that way), other people, basically look like anything -- including some cool camoflage abillity all chameleon stylee. Trouble is, the symbiote wanted to permanently attach itself, and be a parasite more or less... It was able to control Spider-Man while he was asleep, which wasn't that fun anymore.
Anyway, the suit was eventually separated from Spider-Man, and it found Eddie Brock -- it was Brock who decided to call the amalgamation of himself and the symbiote "Venom" and the two / one of them went on a crazed quest to fuck Spidey's shit right up.

Cool. Although I'd heard a version where: Mary Jane's fiance, the astronaut from Spiderman 2, went to some planet and discovered the symbiote. He brings it back, Peter Parker gets exposed to it somehow, and then I guess the rest could go the same way.
Sounds like there's enough backstory and plot going on with Venom to have just a single villain though, I hope they don't bloat up the random action setpieces with two/three villains just to make it a big punctuation mark for the end of the series.
I've liked the way that the films have taken the time to get to know each of the villains so far - it's the whole "humanising the demons" process, but it works in the context of the superhero world to show how you can either turn the powers to be a force for good or a force for evil.
edit: I just found (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom_%28comics%29) this wikipedia link which goes to explain why there are different versions floating around - oh those comic geeks, why cant they keep it simple? It's kind of cool that all the comics crossed over and have references to each other, but to outsiders oh-jesus it's just insane.
Gingerbread Man on 24/2/2006 at 03:53
Maybe that genesis is what Raimi's going to go with, I dunno. I heard he was definitely opposed to including Venom at all, but I've also heard that he may have caved in to studio pressure. I'm really not keeping that close an eye on it, to be honest.
But the Secret Wars genesis is the actual story. And yeah, there's a LOT of backstory to it... iirc, the first Secret Wars series was issued in 1984. :o
It's not that there are different versions floating around... there are just lots of stories and a bit of controversy over who created the character and why. The only other "version" of Venom (I think) is Ultimate Venom. And those bloody Ultimate comics are so far spun off from things that who the fuck knows? Ultimate Galactus is a massive colony of space bugs, and Ultimate Vision is a chick. Go figure. There's also the Marvel Zombies run, if you really want to see how far things have gone over in that section of geekdom.

Yeah, well, Spiderman fighting in space sounds about as retarded to me as Superman not being able to fly.
Gingerbread Man on 24/2/2006 at 03:58
Not as retarded as a Scotsman moving to Australia, you faggot. Although I suppose the average IQ of both countries went up a notch.
>:D

Just to confuse your further :D
Spoilers for the Ultimate Spider-Man comic!
The above is the 616, the more well-known, Marvel Universe. Venom in the new Ultimate lines was sort of created by Peter Parker's and Eddie Brock's dads, who were working together on a treatment for cancer. While investigating his dad's scientific stuff, Peter finds "Project Venom" which is a pot of black goo that joins onto him like above. The whole "trying to control the body" thing is the same. Peter destroys his suit after he almost kills a burglar but Eddie Brock has another sample of the goo, which he uses to become Venom. Peter beats Venom and thinks he's killed him but there's no body and all the research about Project Venom then goes missing, suggesting Eddie Brock is still around with access to the Venom stuff.Pix:

Oh, okay... out of interest, how different are the two existing Spiderman stories to the canon?
