Hi, this is my first post in this part of the forums.:)
I've been playing Morrowind recently and I'm a mage. I've advanced to Apprentice and performed a lot of duties but I still don't get any advancment. They tell me I've done a lot of service but I'm not qualified for Journeyman yet. Well, How much do I need to advance my skills? Most of them around 13 with a few lower or higher.
Second question: How do I use the spell making option that comes up with some AIs? The page that comes up hads nothing that I can do to it and the lists seem to be empty.
Also, is there any way to be able to cast a spell more that one tome in one day, like have my magic energy run down slowly?
BTW, some of my spells fail. Is this because of lack of skill in a certain area or because of my low rank?

To answer your first question, go to your stats screen. Under you Major, Minor and Miscellaneous Skills you'll find the list of guilds you've joined. Select Mages Guild and what comes up should show you what your stats need to be for advancement. Hope that made some sense...
Second question. To create spells you must first buy the spell you need. So if you buy something like Fire Burst then the spell effect 'Fire Damage' will appear in the list. You can combine different effects for more powerful spells, but keep in mind more effects of greater magnitude means a greater magicka cost.

also the "spells" that only can be used once a day is called powers. Different characters start with different powers. They never fail. Normal spells fail if your not good enough. You can see on the menu to you right that lists your spells how great your chance is to suceed for every spell. That's listed to the right of the spellname.

The chance of casting a spell isn't related to your rank in a guild. Guild rank determines which people will offer you services and quests. As far as I've seen, that is pretty much all.
Also, your chance of successfully casting a spell is related to your fatigue. If you are very tired, you won't be able to cast as well. So try resting or drinking a restore fatigue potion before trying a spell.
Oh, and to buy spells, find someone (often in a mage's guild or temple) who has "Spells" as an option. Different AI have different spells. Generally mages (especially Telvanni) have offensive spells, while temple and cult people have defensive and restorative spells (but not always). You can't haggle on spell price, but if they like you, the spells cost less.
