Ah thank you Matthew. I will stop posting when I have nothing more to say on the subject. I have said some idiotic things in this thread, and I have a much clearer view on the speeding issue now, and AM more careful when I drive, and drive slower because of you people. And It really does take up more time to drive slow but if time is the price for safety... I choose life.

I take it you hold a degree in civic engineering then?
You don't always need a degree to know when somethings just plain stupid.

haha, and a master comedian as well, I applaud you, sir.

Quoted for truth.
(though it does help sometimes to have at least a bit of a clue)

Do you? Some roads just need faster speed limits, while others need slower. I was on the highway the other day and the speed limit was 70, amazingly I was only going 60 because I saw a kind of sharp turn coming up, and right off the road was about a 100 ft drop. As I went on the turn going about 55 (when the limit was 70), I noticed a LOT of pressure on the outer part of my truck. My tire would've screeched if I had been going 60, and I probably would've been close to out of control if I was going 70. That road should've had a sign saying "SHARP TURN, 45MPH!!!" but it didn't and because I'm not a complete idiot (just partial), I used my judgment to determine the danger of the turn, thus slowing down. Then miles and miles down the road, I get off this junction onto a highway that's 3 lanes on both sides, NO TRAFFIC!!! Plaines and flatland all around!!! And the speed limit was 55. Go figure. Cops were the only creatures lurking about this ridicules money making highway.
Sorry, but if you look back to the highway code, speed limit signs indicate exactly that: the limit. It means "Do not exceed this speed", not "This is the recommended speed". Initiative is a requirement of being a driver, not a bonus.

Big warning signs along the lines of 'Sharp Bend, XXmph Maximum' are pretty commonplace around motorways though, and I'm sure they prevent accidents.

There is a conflicting school of thought that argues for far fewer road signs. It's better that drivers are always attentive to what's about them, then they're less likely to be caught out when something exciting happens.
Ireland has less road signage on it's country roads than England, but similar speed limits (most country roads in the UK use a 'national speed limit applies' system - 60mph for single carrigde ways, 70mph for double carrigde ways - which is to say that no one's thought about it long enough to impose a suitable speed limit). 60mph is silly for an awful lot of the narrow windy roads that we have, but the English are lulled into a false sense of security by our comprehensive signage that alerts driver to the sharpness of every turn. Which is fine for static things like corners; but not so hot when unexpected things happen. Far fewer people end up wrapped around trees in Ireland.
I'm led believe that the trend is for far fewer pedestrian crossing and such in town centres in Holland (or one of those other wacky liberal European countries) and the result is that it's simply accepted that drivers give way to pedestrians who want to cross the road and it all just kinda works out.
