You're mistaken in thinking there is choice involved.

That movie Speed Racer seems like a pretty dangerous film for epileptic dudes.
All those colors, damn, I like CGI but this film just looks so plastic.

I don't mind some silliness or mindless action, but not when its just blindingly stupid.
For instance, I liked the first X-Men movie, and X2 as well. I thought X3 was hideously bad. I couldn't stand it because it felt totally wrong and not in series with the other two. There are people who just say "its a fun popcorn flick", but I cant look the other way sometimes.
It was the same with the second and third matrix movies - they just threw all the shit from the first one out the window so that they could justify the next two, but "they were good popcorn flicks".
If they can keep their shit together in Iron Man and have people act the same from one scene to another it might be OK, but certain things cant be overlooked (and shouldnt if you ask me, why do you think we see such shit movies?)

It is pretty amazing how easily people mess up what are essentially gifts. The Matrix Trilogy could have been so, so much more.

Quoted for truth. Most of the time. Sometimes I think I should just chill out a bit more but then I realise that 1+hrs has gone on what was essentially a waste of life. I'm finding more and more that I can accept aweful stuff as "popcorn", but I think that's more to do with me caring less - jaded by the naffness; I sometimes feel I can't expect more. :.(
The last thing I can truly say I've enjoyed was The Wire. The last film I watched was The Kingdom which was a putrescent mishmash of patriotic crappery, lessons in how not to act, failure to highlight anything with any weight and yet surprisingly visceral, yet somehow achingly predictable, action. In short, a turd.

Won't somebody please think of Ed Norton as The Hulk!

Don't make me ressurrect that thread I made. You wouldn't like that thread when it's angry!

Christ, it's like a bunch of you just turned into Aerothorn. Whatever the hell happened to having FUN at the movies?
As Stitch noted, it's not really a choice. You think I LIKE having an incredibly limited taste in film? It's not that I don't want to have fun, it's just that I don't see any universe in which Speed Race could engage me. For me, action scenes only work if I care about the character, AND there is a sense of vulnerability. If I don't, there is no sense of danger and no thrill, and then it's just a waste of special effects. And here, I can't imagine caring about Speed Racer, and I can't imagine him actually, say, dieing if I did.
But hey, I got like 280 DVDs on my netflix queue, so it's not like I really need something to go see in theatres.

And lest I get painted into the Aerothorn corner, I'd like to point out that I fucking love big, dumb action movies as long as I can connect with the characters and the action scenes are exhilarating.
I love Jurassic Park, for god's sake.
Edit: I also have to second SE's agreement with the extracted Aeroquote.

Posit - if you care about the characters and the action is exhilarating it ain't so dumb after all.
I still haven't seen Jumper. How was it?
