I thought Sin City wasn't even remotely entertaining for the most part, just to weigh in. I don't mind the odd style over substance movie (usually weird european and japanese animations), but that didn't even have an original style. The comics actually had that going for them (if little else). There was the odd bit of tonally spot on scenery chewing from Mickey Roarke, Nick Stahl and (bizarrely) Brittney Murphy but Rodriguez has no control over any of that stuff. It's just more like random back and white slapstic
Old noirs did manage to create a sense of a believable hyperreal world, Sin City didn't at all for me, so I guess I'm down with that point of view. Speed Racer might yet, so we'll see (I'm not all that interested in it really).
Anyone who really thinks they like noir ought to see Brick immediately. It's about a million billion times better a noir pastche than Sin City dreams of being.
-edit- actually that trailer makes SR look like a Spy Kids knock off.

That may be, if you could actually hear the fucking dialogue in Brick.

Buy a system with a volume control. I know it seems old school...
(given the risk of levity being missed I would suggest that maybe it was the missing centre channel problem. I watched it in stereo and it was aces)

Plus, the sequence at the end where Joseph Gordon-Levitt explains what happened in the rest of the movie is incredibly lame.

I'm not sure exactly which bit you mean, but yeah detective stories never have those sorts of scenes.
N'Al on 28/4/2008 at 10:37
That may well be, but the one in Brick is especially lame.

I don't necessarily agree with Subjective Effect here--I found Sin City more or less entertaining, after all--but he is on to something. When popcorn flicks aren't grounded in at least some semblance of reality I feel disconnected from the action and therefore bored. I'm perfectly willing to accept metal suits that defy the laws of physics and rocket-propelled gadget cars as long as they're surrounded by a plausible reality and characters that behave like actual people. It's difficult to sustain any tension or perception of danger when filmmakers twist reality to suit the needs of a particular scene.
As for these two films, the trailers are staggeringly bad but almost all trailers are, so we'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if Iron Man actually turns out to be pretty good.

Staggeringly bad? WTF do you expect them to show in a movie about a flying suit of armor? Tony Stark eating soup?
