As a foreigner I wonder what is actually the problem? They made a Spanish version of the national anthem. Isn't that a compliment for the US? It's not meant to replace the official English version, is it?
Heck, I want to hear Turks make their version of the German hymn now. Preferrably a rap version by <strike>Grup Tekkan</strike> Tarkan! :D
So this looks like a pseudo-discussion to me, it's really about the illegal immigration it seems.

Isn't stopping Catholic immigrants from speaking their own languages the whole reason for public schools?
Sorry I don't quite follow. (ie is it a comment on Catholic schools and Catholic immigrants?)

On reflection, while undoutably immigration has a lot to do with this, I wonder if a lot of it is also that weird sensitivity some people (Republicans) have to the purity of the song (and flag, and national monuments, etc.)
Perhaps. As for me, I suspect it's not much more than a fad, like Macarena.

I think the Star Spangled Banner should only be sung in languages I don't understand, it might be less nauseating then.
No matter what language in which you choose to sing the anthem, it's still damnnear impossible! How many times have you just mouthed the words because you didn't want the person next to you to start laughing because you sounded like a mashed cat, only to realize that they were doing the same thing too because they couldn't hit the high notes either.
F.S. Key must have had a voice like Mariah Carey.

The song is not that hard to sing if you are a singer. I can sing it just fine.
To dismiss the song because it's difficult...well the music of Mozart or Van Halen has some difficult passages...do we dismiss that?
RE: the spanish version. Haven't heard it. I'll take GBM's word that it sucks.
I think the whole idea of singing TSSB in any other language is stupid. I wouldn't go to Mexico and sing their anthem in english nor would I expect them to put up signs in english so as to make things convienient for me. When in Rome...

I'm not dismissing it; merely saying it's hard to sing for the percentage of the population who
aren't singers.
Most people don't go around singing Mozart or Van Halen in public unless they're opera singers or in a rock band (at a performance). Although it might be amusing to hear a co-worker suddenly burst out singing an aria from Apollo et Hyacinthus or 'Why Can't This Be Love?'. ;)

I would if I had to play Mozart at a baseball game.

Speak for yourself.
I sing (badly) whenever I feel like it, and I often do it in public (and yes, it is sometimes Mozart).
So there!;)

All I know (from that I remember) is that it was the French in the XIXth century which coined the term Latin America....sacre bleu :o
In any case, though not really nationalist, I do dig (some) my country's national anthem (Meh-he-coh).
Also, I don't sing that bad, but don't do it often...eh...it's fun to express the chords.
