For some reason, the sound will cut out for no reason, and when it DOES play, it sometimes gets distorted. It happens in Unreal when I load the next map, UT a few seconds after starting(the Thievery mod is a strange exception), and Deus Ex after starting/loading a game. I hear many other people with nForce-based sound have had problems as well.
System specs:
Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB RAM
Aforementioned integrated nForce
Radeon 9600 XT
Keep in mind that it's a 1 1/2 year-old Compaq which my dad paid for. Yes, that includes the new 9600 XT.
I tried adjusting latency & compatiblity settings. Neither seems to work. I REALLY want to play Deus Ex without the sound problems!

If you have the space in your tower, then spend the extra money and get a real sound card, like an SB Audigy, which is excellent and now affordable. You'll be surprised at the difference in sound quality.
If you're using a shuttle and you have a network card, then I'm sorry :(

I will get a sound card someday...that is, when my stepdad buys one! For now, I just want some sort of fix.

I have the Asus A7N8X Deluxe and am using the on board sound which is much better than my creative card was. Does true 5.1 surround for everthing which Creative doesn't. I'm not having any problems with Unreal games except in UT where some sounds come in load once in a wail but it did that on my Creative card too. That could be because I installed the Creative EAX 2 patches years ago and I'm too lazy to reinstall UT again. UT2K3 runs just find with Hardware 3D sound just don't use Hardware 3D + EAX because its for EAX3 (Audigy) only. Hopefuly NVIDIA will update to EAX3 soon because the card is capable of handling it. The older unreal engine does have a problem with PCI Sound cards when faster systems came out that was never fixed. You could try changing the PCI Latency time in the Advanced Audio config to 60 or higher. That usually works form most people. I don't have DeusX installed anymore so I can't be more specific.
If you get and Audigy be carfull because they don't work on some Nforce boards (and probably some othe chipsets to) and others must have the Audigy's game port disabled before they work. You can use the onboard game port so it's not a big deal. For some reason Creative didn't make the gameport on the Audigy Plug N Play so some BIOS have a problem with it.
*Update*
Didn't realize that my sound settings where reset at some point, Changed them back and now no sound glitches at all in Unreal and UT. Here are my Unreal settings I think DeusX used the same sound engine. My System supports Surround Sound but enabling it doesn't seem to change anything so I leave it off. "Lantency" and "OutputRate" are the keys, 60 works best for me and 44.1KHz is the best, they doen't seem to like a rate of 48K.

Unfortunately, your settings don't work. It may have to do with you having a different chipset. If I start a game REALLY quick, though, the sounds stay on for a while. And I'm sorry if you're not happy with me bumping this topic, but why create a new topic when one already exists?
EDIT:Fixed the problem-setting UseDirectSound= to False does the trick!
