Hi all!
I have winxp, and an old but working Sound Blaster LIVE! audio card. The card worked with Thief 2 for ages, but now, I hear nothing but loud cracks ingame. The sound in menus is working. The only recent change in my PC configuration was some new RAMS.
Also, all music, video sound, youtube, winamp ARE working on my PC and I can hear the sounds properly.
When I set EAX and Hardware acceleration OFF, the sound is working.
Any ideas?
thank you

When I set EAX and Hardware acceleration OFF, the sound is working. Apparently, there are several problems with Thief whenever Hardware acceleration (for sound) is turned on. I have had several problems with EAX effects as well as four-speaker sound in Thief 2 with
every sound card and sound chip I used within the last nine years. But it's only Thief 2, and only with Hardware acceleration. Sometimes, it works for a few hours, but when I just reboot the machine, things go wrong again.
I think that LGS maybe used uncommon methods to give commands to the soundcard in Hardware accelerated mode. Anyway, I have given up on that long ago and now continue living with stereo sound only.
I know that's not the answer you like to hear, but unless you discover more about the sound problem on your machine, this is all I can tell you.
:idea:By the way, have you tried to take out the new RAMs again, just for testing purposes?

I didn't try to remove the RAMS, but I will probably first try a reinstall. Strange thing is - it worked from january until my post, which is a long time.
Also, my hardware is so old that I needed to download a hacked driver to run it on XP.

Is there any way to buy a modern sound card today, and enjoy Thief 2's EAX with it, or they are not compatible?

All I know is that the latest drivers for SB 24 are broken. Try uninstalling the drivers and install the last drivers that were for Windows XP only, not the Vista ones.

When I used my SB Live! on my XP machine I had to use a set of updated drivers from creative labs. I might still have the download of that driver set archives somewhere. If you need it I'll look through my old backup discs.
