Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could help with a sound issue I have when playing the game- basically, every time I cut to the menu screen, or open a readable, when I cut back to the game the sound blasts loudly for a moment or two (sometimes longer). To get around being deafened I go to the audio screen from the options menu and move the volume bar a little either way, and then I can safely go back in-game with the sound normal. It's an easy enough workaround, but it does kill the immersion a tad (re readables), and I figure it can't hurt to ask if anyone knows why this might be happening. Only happens when playing Thief, btw, not other games.

I had that happen just recently and never figured out what it was. The computer had a new motherboard installed and after reassembly, the problem surfaced. My husband finally took out my Audigy 2 card and I am using the on-board sound. No problem with that so I'm assuming it is in someway connected with the Audigy card.

I had the same problem with an Audigy 2 a couple of years ago. Updating the Sound Blaster driver cured it - the version I'm running is 5.12.4.1196 dated 11/08/2006.
A normal update didn't fix the problem but the Creative Software Autoupdate did the trick. It only works with Internet Explorer. Chase (
