*sigh* I really don't want to be a pain in the ass, but is there any way to get this game to run in windows 98? I was able to do it with the original system shock.

Works fine for me, and a bunch of others.
Use the forum search function... I suggest searching for "win98" and the like. I think there should be some descriptions on what to try in there somewhere!!

Ah.. Thanks, I'll try that!

Okay, so I've pulled out my uw manual. It gives different memory requirements that uw needs in order to run with both speach and sound and so on and so forth. So, I'm thinking I'll make a shortcut to dos and just put the correct numbers in the memory tab in properties. That would work, right? Worked for shock anyway.. Thing is, I don't know exactly what to put. What would the correct numbers be for the different types of memory (conventional, EMS, XMS, etc.). That'd do the trick, right?

That just might do the trick. I can't help you right know (i'm behind a laptop) but play around a bit with the memory settings.
And have you searched the boards for 'memory'?
What irq and dma settings does your soundcard use?
Good luck,
Whisky

Okay, I've got DMA 1 and IRQ 5 I believe. I haven't had any luck with those memory settings YET, but I'm working on it. Uhm, I'll post my config.sys and autoexec.bat (the ones listed in the advanced tab in the uw1.exe properties menu) to see if that helps the problem at all.
config.sys:
DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
autoexec.bat:
SET TMP=c:\windows\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\windows\TEMP
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4

Speaking of memory, in the "uinstall.exe" menu when selecting my soundcard, to the left it says I have "0 more megabytes" of diskspace. So I'm thinking memory really could be the issue.

Way back in my DOS days I had the same problem with the sound not initilizing. It is because there is enough memory to start and run the game, but not enough for the sound system, so it does not start. You need to free more memory.
Alter the config.sys to look like this:
config.sys:
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
Device=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM HIGHSCAN
DOS=HIGH,UMB
Now see if this works.

First play around with your memmory settngs. Just make a shortcut to uw.exe and edit the memoryproperties.
If that still doesn't work try setting the irq of your soundcard to 7 (I believe this is the standard value for UW).
Do you only have onboard sound? An additional soundcard might cause conflicts.
Cheers,
