I remember from ISA there was a texture extractor (DXTool, I think) but was there ever a sound extractor? Anyone remember/have a link?
While I'm at it: Does anyone have a simple, no frills .ogg player recommendation? I was thinking winamp, but I'm quite confident it must be a bloated advert-laden mess by now, since it was pretty bad three versions ago - I run 2.6 :). Alternately, what does it take to beat FRIGGING MEDIA PLAYER into playing these .wav files? I have MP8 and don't wish to upgrade it (silly me) - every time it tries to play one of these wavs, it assures me it's connecting and downloading a new codec, and then every time without fail: "ClassFactory cannot supply requested class". Okay, so then why did I connect to a codec server and download a new codec? In fact, I have never once seen media player properly update. Why on earth do we give money to microsoft?
Oh wait, that's right. Most of us don't.

What you are looking for is probably a tool called Sound Drone. You can get it here: (

Sound Drone can extract sounds from the .csc files, where they are stored and coded with a x-box adpcm codec.
Unfortunatly the author - known as Cascade in the late IS forums - has not yet found the time or enthusiasm to continue Sound Drone to a state where it also can replace or add sounds to the .csc-files.

Aha, that sounds familiar! Thanks Neuling.
Now if I just had a way to play them. I got the newest winamp and tried it on my laptop, only to find it doesn't support ogg. *boggle* WTF? I looked on the plugin database and nothing comes up for ogg support. Am I missing something, or is the entire winamp community missing something. So, there we have it. Microshaft and MPlayer (and winamp!) 1, me, 0.
Any recommendations remain welcome.

Wuh? Winamp supports ogg files just fine, and I didn't have to download any plugins for it.
I'm using Winamp 5.07..which one did you grab?
SneaksieDave on 27/3/2005 at 01:16
Winamp 5.08e. There's no choice for .ogg in file extensions, and when I purposely drop an ogg right in front of it, it doesn't know what to do with it.
Does the fact that it's the "lite" version mean they castrated it? If so, maybe I'll get the next bulkier version. :grr: On a related note: simply horrible website - not one piece of useful information on it. It sure is useful for them to keep talking about that llama though, yup.

Waht? I love Winamp 5. Got the full version, which includes a Vorbis decoder DLL.
Anyway, for them wavs, try a search for "mplayer2.exe" on your local disk. I'd recommend putting a shortcut in your "Send To" folder, it's really handy for unbloated playback.
Speaking of the "Send To" folder, here's a tip: Create a shortcut to it, call it "Add", then drop the shortcut into the folder. Now you can add shortcuts to "Send To" just by going right click > Send To > Add.

Yep, that's the one I have wav files associated with. Version 6.4.09.1125. Doesn't work. :( When it connects for the codec, I get the message above. I've tried that, and the "new" one, which is version 8.0 (I refuse to upgrade after seeing how bloated MP10 is).
Anyway, I'm getting full winamp 5.08 as I type... Next I have to try to trick Sound Drone into using T3, since I don't have DE2, and it seems to want the directory structure intact.

BTW, Sound Drone itself can play the sounds... you don't have to extract them to play them...

I don't have DX:IW and I didnt have this problem. When the file dialogue came up, I just browsed to Thief3/CONTENT/T3/Sounds/SchemaMetaFile_DVD1.csc
The only snag is that once you've browsed to a directory, you don't get the opertunity to browse again in future, which may be your problem. To fix this you need to use regedit, and delete the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DXIW Sound Drone
Then launch the program again and it will let you rebrowse for the Sound Schema directory.

Great! I got Sound Drone and I can play all the sounds in the schemas, now. :) I extracted some of the sounds and assigned them to the sounds in the Schema Browser that I couldn't hear before and now they work fine from within the browser. :) But when I assign them by Trigger Script to play when I enter a volume, I still can't hear them. :p Guess I have more work to do to get the script working. :nono: Getting closer. Thanks for all the help, all! :thumb:

No worry, it all worked. The full winamp plays oggs, and there was no problem getting Sound Drone to work.
On a related note: OMFG, sound OVERLOAD. I arrogantly thought, "Cool, it works! Now I'm going to listen to them all!" An hour and a half later, and after skipping pages and pages of them (meaning, I was listening to probably 1/200 of them) I finally got to the Zombie sound effects. Yikes. There are SO many sounds. Couple those with imports from T1&2 (with respect due to the sound work on T3, the ambients from T1&2 just rule) and we've got a sound library so extensive that almost anything can be done with it. There's even what seemed like dozens(?) of unused conversations. Incredible.
