I have heard things about trapping animals in soulgems does anyone know how this works? Im a very strong warrior and wizard.

1: make sure you have some soulgems in your inventory
2: cast "soultrap" on a monster.
3: kill monster before spell wears off. Soul is now trapped and will go into a gem in your inventory!
That's the simple form. Also make sure your gem is high-quality enough for the job. A crappy rat's soul will fit in a lesser soul gem, but for a Golden Saint's soul you need a Great\Grand souldgem. (d'oh, I'm forgetting the exact names here).
A soul will go into the smallest available gem, so conversely don't go soultrapping rats if you only have Grand gems in your inventory! Soul gems can only be used once each, with the exception of a special one you can get from Azura...

Do you know if you can also trap humanoids in a soulgem?

You can trap anything that's not considered an NPC by the game.

You can trap NPC's souls using a mod, however. In fact, they took the time to make a special soul for Fargoth! You can get it (

Is it really that useful? Not really.
Is it worth it to hold Fargoth's soul in your hands? Definitely.
