The hand-to-hand tactic is actually quite effective. One of the Thieves guild quests required me to get the Nerano Manor key. Since I was level 2 I sucked at picking pockets and admiring them to give me the key. Instead I picked Nerano's pockets and failed (Oddly enough, no crime was reported) then practiced my hand-to-hand on him. He really sucks at hand to hand so he didn't hit me the whole time we were at it.
My hand-to-hand went up by 15 points by the time I knocked him out.
I went there recently (I'm now level 24) and he loved me again! :D
The point of this story is that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time...

bwahahahahahaha
good use of that line...
i shoulda thought of that.. cos i just ramble on sometimes...
oh yeah.. and hand to hand is fun... i am at the point where a lot
of npc's just die after one hit of my sword... so i've taken up beating
ppl to death... takes a while but it's highly amusing... i boxed my way
through a whole cave of smugglers.. that took ages...

I don't think you actually have to do all of Eydis Fire-Eye's quests in order to reach the top of the Fighters Guild. I know I didn't do them all before I ended up as the Archmaster of the Fighters Guild. I did that one and one more (I think) but then I started doing the quests from the other Fighter's Guilds and never got back to her.
