So really, the macro part only orinated from the something aweful forums, where you could actually specify a bunch of images using specially [img] tags.
Oh, and Scots, according that article, the images typically contain superimposed text. Whether or not this is part of Paranoid's rant or not remains to be seen.

Back in the day (1999 or so)* we used to call macros those images made from text. These were often sent in chatrooms to disrupt things. Though I was under the impression a macro had to be made from text, I s'pose a 'bomb' definition also makes sense.
I used to always do the one giving the finger.
