Yeah, I replayed TDS a few years ago, completely vanilla, and it does not hold up at all. I stand by all the criticisms I made initially and probably have some new ones. But I also still acknowledge it as a Thief game. It still has enough of the ingredients and it does have that one great level.

Yes, the seeds of the original games were still there and initially had a few of the original Devs involved but the different game engine, various changes to gameplay, third person and numerous cut backs made it feel quite different from the previous games. It had Stephen though and attempted to complete the story, though the art style never landed with me. It felt like a different world to me.

I replayed it vanilla this year, and I really wanted to enjoy it, but I mostly did not. I have many more things to say, but the gist of it is: it falls short in every area except audio. I genuinely enjoyed 2014 more even though it was by no means great.

Who would try to play it vanilla in 2025?

I was playing on Steam Deck and not all of the mods worked. I managed to get the resolution correct, but I couldn't figure out the level-stitching mod in Linux. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make, though, given that the levels are clearly designed to be segmented and the loading times were quick.

I was playing it on an Xbox and I don't think there is any way to get the mods working there.

There's a new version of the Sneaky Upgrade coming up. If you'd like to help improve things for the Steam Deck, let me know.

It makes a great difference, but of course for some maps more than for others. The Widow Moira mission, which is basically a house arbitrarily split in two, probably benefits the most but also the Cradle, where you do run back and forth a bit. But for all the maps, not having an immersion breaking teleporter pop-up thrown in your face half-way through is a great improvement. Also, besides the merged half-maps, (

If you can guide me through installation, I'd be happy to help test it for you.

That's great - I'll start a separate thread in the Mods and Utilities forum tomorrow.
