The setting is definitely Nu-Thief, the Mechanical Eye was Unique Loot in that game, from the "Sneak Thief" a couple hundred years before.
Looks like a light gem and the back of her glove.
Not sure how the lock picking is meant to work, vibration feedback?
Crouch walking might be a literal pain to do for an entire game.
And I wonder if that is Stephen Russell, or AI generating based on his lines in previous games.
Not that that's necessarily a bad thing if true.

It seems to be a prequel to Thief 2014. On the website it talks about Ulysses Northcrest - which according to the Reboot wiki was the first Northcrest baron, and he did outlaw the Hammerite and the Pagan religions. And he also caught the sneaky Thief ... a lot of nonsense they came up with back then. But with this in mind it seems to take place between Deadly Shadows and Thief 2014.
My expectations are low. Visuals and plot are too tightly connected to the worst Thief. But let's see.

I saw an announcement for this and I thought it was some little fan project, but this is a legit new game.
The aesthetic was respectable but a bit too "clean". How is it that modern graphics can never quite capture the dingy authentic look of the days when light was baked in?
I don't have experience with VR, but in principle the hands gameplay is an interesting innovation.
Well, I'll give it the same hope I've given every Thief game since TDS.

That's actually pretty interesting. That would put this game closer in the timeline to Deadly Shadows than to Thief 2014 (assuming they're in the same timeline at all).

Hah, this was unexpected! Yeah, I'll probably play this on the Quest 3S.

Anyone who played a bunch of Thi4f able to say how much of this trailer looks cribbed from it in some form? The frame feeling looks very familiar at least.
It does look almost exactly like Thief 2014. I wonder if they just straight up re-used a lot of assets from it. That'd be fine by me, I liked the look of that game. And yeah I imagine a lot of gameplay elements working the same, like looking for hidden switches on painting frames, and having dedicated rope-arrowing spots.

A new protagonist with a ghost in the shell Stephen Russell serving as a snarky commentator is already far more imaginative and intriguing than anything The Adventures of Mopey Garrett in Search for His Angry Not-Girlfriend had to offer.
Shame about the generic-looking setting, though.

Not even Stephen Russell can fix the atrocity the reboot already is. Hopefully it flops.

I think it's about time we had Thief in VR honestly, the game is very well suited for that and a few of the things in Thi4f would definitely have worked better in VR, such as the ubuquitous hands. I'm cautiously curious and hope this turns out decent if they manage to fix some of the biggest problems the reboot had (poor sound propagation, linear levels and overly restrictive mechanics). I don't really care about the lore at this point to be frank.
I believe this is the kind of thing they should've done back in 2014 honestly, rather than trying to replicate the lightning in a bottle that was Deus Ex: Human Revolution and appeal to the broadest player range by making a big budget reboot of an even more obscure franchise.

People who aren't familiar with the state of modern VR games should be aware that apart from a few notable standouts, most of them are significantly scaled back in scope compared to so-called AAA games from big-name publishers. So it's a given, I think, that Thief VR will be a small-scale game without fancy graphics or the huge variety of bigger-budget titles like Deadly Shadows. But honestly, as someone who's been gaming for like 35 years, VR feels more spirited, innovative, and exciting than much of the mainstream because devs are forced to do more with less. There's also an indescribable difference between seeing this on a flat screen and seeing it in 3D at full scale.
So I'm excited. It may be good or bad (VR releases are notoriously uneven, especially at launch), but I think it's more likely to at least be enjoyable than if the franchise was handed off to a high-budget developer who had to tick all the corporate boxes. VR isn't there yet, and we can be thankful for it.

Hearing Stephen Russell as Garret after all these years was really something wasn't it? :D
I have to say I'm pretty exited, it looks they are bringing several components from the original trilogy. I know many will have mixed feelings regarding the fact that this is a VR title but I'm totally open to it. The T4 aesthetics though is the only thing that I find a bit concerning, but I guess that's guilt by association...
