Anyone read the part where it said the chance of hitting earth was one in 45,000?
I'm not saying we should ignore it, but it's hardly "OMG WE'RE DOOMED". There is a very, very high chance that the proper course of action is to ignore it. The question is whether we want to risk that.
We the human race should set up space defenses anyways, because this will not be the last asteroid to threaten earth, nor the only object that can pose a threat.

Yeah Aerothorn seemed to miss the point. It's not the fact that this one is definitely going to hit us, but that the odds on this one were way smaller (compared to one in a millionth chance). Humanity often lacks foresight, we need to do something now before it's oh shit too late. When dealing with concepts such as the fate of our existence, we shouldn't let bureaucracy slow us down. It's worth being reactionary and paranoid about this, considering what is at stake.

Fate! That's the point. Accept it or leave the planet. I won't let anyone fidget with nuclear bombs and lasers just because they believe the sky might come crashing down on them someday.

Fate is there to challenge it, so shall we charge up the energy cannons and give the asteroid a warm welcome to our solar system?

Earth needs a plasma defense system. Pledge now!

It'll bounce off my cock long before it reaches the thermosphere.
Oh yeah. I went there.

The question is how to set up such a system that A. Cannot be used as a military weapon and B. won't trigger an arms race.
Cause I don't relish the idea of having a bunch of lasers floating in space ready to blow up people.
Though I guess it's not really any different from ICBMs when you get right down to it.

We have already done this by exporting to you our pop music culture, and stunningly brilliant day time TV programs.
WE JUST GIVE AND GIVE AND GIVE...
I think I love you, fett. We can repopulate the earth after the asteroid hits?
Seriously, people! You know it's just gonna burn up in our atmosphere and whatever's left is going to be no bigger than a chihuahua's head. . . . . .

If humans would one day stop acting like kids and work together as a species instead of blowing each other up, then that wouldn't be much of a problem.
