Some Thief 2 textures not showing on new machine. - by Reaper310

I recently bought a new machine and installed and reinstalled Thief 2 about 3 times. Some of the textures are not showing, instead there is a solid blue or pink or striped surface. In addition none of the FM's work, they just crash. I had to install ddfix and darkwide, otherwise the textures were terrible. I have all the latest scripts installed, the same as on my old machine, where everything worked fine. The machine is an I7 4 core 2.8ghz, 8 gigs of DDR3 ram. ASUS motherboard, ASUS HD 5850 1024 MB video card. Windows XP32 sp3. Newest dri8vers installed as well.
TIA

Ekhem, 8gigs of ram and windows xp 32bit?

XP has major problems with more than 3-4 Gigs of RAM. Drop back to 3 or 4 and try again. If 4 still gives you problems, drop to 3.
It also can have problems with large ammounts of HDD in a single unit.
Example: I have 1.75 T byte of internal HDD in seven HDD. I added a 1T byte HDD and the system refused to allow the use of the 1T HDD. I replaced that with two 500 Gig units and it runs fine.
I would also check the Vcard. If you have another swap them out and see if it makes a difference. Do this first.

I would first try to install an operating system that is a little more up to date...
you have a $2000,- ? pc with the all the latest hardware and an operating system from the time people ran around with swords and blackjacks ;) also 32bit operating systems cant use (or even recognize) more then 3.25 GB of RAM, so the rest is waste... not sure how good your I7 in tripple channel mode works then...
try windows 7 x64, thief (and almost anything) works perfect on it. I haven't found any game I really could not run on my 7 64bit install.
then installe thief with tafferpatcher and enable all fixes, widescreen, dualcore, ddfix. Enable anisothropic filtering in ddfix.ini, try different values with the UseSysMemOverlay=2 or 0 and ;OverlayColourKey=0xf81f or 0x0000. In the compatibility tab check: disable visual themes, disable desktop compositing, disable display scaling on high DPI settings, and runs as administrator.
then go into your ATI settings and make sure to enable V-sync, try anti-alliassing with multi-sampling first (force it) use 16x Anisothropic filter and if possible disbale multicore aware mode (don't know how this is called on ATI cards as I am using an nvidia...)
and in user.cfg you can try (un-)commenting the safe_texture_manager with ;
it should work with your system this way...

Bonusbartus, your suggestions ar valid, but why get a new Operating system? If it works, it works. XP runs fine on most systems. If you are suggesting 7 just so he can run Thief or use the RAM, why?
I would disable three of the cores to start with and set the infinity to one. Thief does not like muliti-core CPU's.
I happen to have a Fujitsu laptop with W7, 4 of my other systems (I have 13) run fine with the XP system. Do everything they are supposed to and don't give me any problems at all, except for the freeze with the 1Tet HDD I mentioned earlier. That I cured with 2 500 GIGers.
And your referrence to "swords and Blackjacks" is ridiculous. If you are referrencing CPM, or DOS, or even Win 3.1, you might have a point but XP is not that archaic and the failure of VISTA that caused W7 to appear, shows that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

The problem with xp isn't that it doens't work, the problem is that it is just old and doesn't support all new things. If you have a pc like Reapers, you want windows 7 64bit, why?
because firstly why would you buy a + $150 dollar (5850 cost over 300) graphics card produced to render directx 11 games when your operating system doesn't do anything newer than directx 9, it's just a waste of resources. Secondly 8 GBs of ram cost about $350 and the pc only recognizes 3.25 of them, furthermore it can only allocate 768MB of ram to one program iirc. that limit doesn't apply to x64 operating systems (BTW 8gb is a waste on I7 systems because of their tripple channel memory you would want to go for 6 (3x2GB) or 12 (3x4GB) for the cpu to be able to use it.
I know windows 7 has some flaws, and vista had even more (I worked at a computer store for over a year). But even bigger companys are adopting windows 7 now because it just scales better on newer hardware. with windows xp mode in windows 7 you can even use old programs and hardware! that don't run on windows 7 (as long as they don't need your graphics card... so games wont work very well).
And there are more things in windows 7 that are just more advanced and you should just take advantage of those things if your hardware supports it.
I mean if I would use your argument of "if it aint broken don't fix it" then I would just buy me an old pentium D dual core cpu with 2gb of ram and an ATI2850 Graphics card, that is a system that doesn't see as much of an advantage in windows 7 64bit.
Of course new systems do everything they need to do on xp, but it is just a waste of such an expensive pc!

Maybe Reaper310 has another OS on the same machine which does use all that RAM. Or maybe he had trouble getting a 64-bit-OS to work with Thief. Or... whatever.
Let's see whether he can get Thief up and running by trying the suggestions made so far, and keep the OS discussions for later.;)

By the way I am running a dual install with windows 7-64 ultimate, but could not get Thief to even run on it. Also I am a betatester for a new version of Falcon combat flight simulator for an unmentioned company and had problems with that on W7 as well. Some others have been successful though. Looks like I will have to talk to them and find out how they did it. So I will be trying to get T2 to run on W7-64 and the other app as well. I will try your suggestions as well. By the way Linux does not like this machine as well.

Well, just try tafferpatcher to install thief 2, with every addon, it should just work on your pc,
just not sure about that ATI5850... I m just using an old 8800GTS512, but I can't think of anything that would break thief 2... even with a newer card. Just play with the settings in the ATI CCC,
btw a new Falcon flight sim? I am dieing to play a new flightsim... played F16 falcon 4.0 allied force a lot... is it a whole new game? like falcon 5.0 or more a 4.1?
damn now I cant wait to play it... but a new game should be able to run on windows 7 ;) and new machines!

I tried Tafferpatcher and I still get the anomalous textures. I am even thinking of reinstalling windows, since I am having some probs with the Falcon sim crashing as well. I basically only play thief and Falcon with an occasional tomb raider. Sorry I cannot say anymore about the Falcon sim, but it is in early beta and some people are running it in windows 7-64. I am sure that when it is finished, which may not be for quite some time, that it will run in w7 without any extra tweaking. The devs are very much aware of it. Damn if I can just get those textures fixed.
