I'm at the point now where I'm at the mobile unit after helping Grularg (spelling?). Anyway, I've gotten new armor and going with the scientist to take measurements.
My issue is with weight. I want to keep the stalker suit, however it seems no matter what I do I'm always carrying to much stuff. Even if I dump a bunch of it I'm always at around 57 kg. That's carrying a noiseless pistol, (which I really like), and 2 assault rifles. So I sold the stalker suit and just using the new one I got from the scientist. Should I just pick one assault rifle to keep the weight down?
And this is a really stupid question, but when using artifacts do the red stats indicate negative effects and the green positive? For example, if an artifact says radiation -10 in red, does that mean I'm more liable to be hurt by radiation, and if it's green it will improve effects of radiation?

Regarding the artifacts, if one artifact says radiation -10 it means that it will purge radiation from you at a rate of 10 per second. But you're probably confusing something, as there are no artifacts that will say -n in red for radiation. They will either have +n in red (meaning: they poison you with radiation at a rate of n when you wear them) or -n in green (meaning that they will purge radiation from you at a rate of n when you wear them). Red always means a negative effect, whereas green means a positive one.
Regarding your weight, in my oppinion you're answering your own question. If you're carrying two assault rifles, then you're on your way to having too much weight on your hands. The main contributors for weight are weapons, their respective ammo, and artifacts (0.5Kg each). My usual base weight is around 30Kg. I usually don't carry a pistol. I hardly ever use it, therefore I don't want to carry its weight and of its ammo. As for basic stuff, I normally only carry two medkits, 15-20 bandages, and 5 antirad drugs. If I need more, there's usually plenty of it to take from the guys I kill. I also try not to carry more than 800 rounds of ammo for the weapon I'm using. I make frequent visits to the Bar, where I keep the excess ammo and other useful stuff stashed. Also, carry only the artifacts that you know you'll be using for sure. For instance, there's no sense in carrying more than 5 artifacts that purge radiation, since you won't be able to wear more than five. In my normal setup I carry around 12 artifacts: five radiation-purging ones (usually Crystals or Urchins), four bulletproof cap ones (normally two Mama's Beads and two Stone Flowers or Night Stars), a couple of endurance improving ones (Moonlights) and one or two Souls, to speed up health recovery during more quiet times.
Anyway, if you really want to be able to carry some extra weight before you can get your hands on an Exoskelleton (which allows you to carry up to 80Kg), the next best thing is the Tourist Suit, which allows up to 70Kg. In (

Thanks very much for the info. Just what I needed.
However are you saying that the effects of artifacts can be stacked? I figured one of each type was all you could use.
Bjossi on 23/7/2007 at 20:20
They can be stacked, use as many of the same type as you want, as long as you got room in the belt.
D'Arcy on 23/7/2007 at 20:22
No, you can wear up to five artifacts in your belt, and their effects accumulate. e.g., if you wear two Mama's Beads (+5% bulletproof cap each), plus two Night Stars (+5% bulletproof cap, +5 radiation each), this means that you'll get 20% extra protection against bullets (5% x 4) besides the protection you already get from the suit you're wearing, and will also be poisoned by radiation at a rate of +10, therefore you should also wear a fifth artifact that purges radiation to compensate for this poisoning - a simple Droplet or Thorn will be enough. The thing about artifacts is simply managing to combine them in order to get the best possible combined effect for the situation/environment that you're faced with.

Thanks again.
I had no idea you could do this! I've been selling any multible artifacts I've found and only been keeping one of each. Crap! I'll have to keep this in mind for the future.
I've been thinking of starting over, as the game is more complicated than it first appears. I don't believe I'm that far into it yet, so I may do just that. I've been kind of stumbling around so far not really knowing what to do.
Thanks again.

Even for the ones you don't need and plan to sell, you should consider holding onto them and waiting to get quests to "find" them. You can immediately turn them in to the quest giver and make more on them than just plain selling them.
To store them, stash things in an unused chest someplace. For example, right at the start there the group of mercs (or whatever) sitting around the campfire just outside of the trader's bunker where you start. There's a chest right there on the ground in which you can store tons of stuff and it will never disappear (for the entire game that I've seen). Pull them out when you need them - and you don't need to carry then all around with you.

Thanks. This game is very fucking cool.
I just finished the X18 mission. (think that's what it's called), and found Ghosts suit. My God that was fun. I then went back to see the wacky doctor that's always saying "hello" and found I was dying of radiation. Couldn't figure out why at first. It's little things like this that I find make the game different from others. I was going to turn in Ghosts armor but decided to keep it as it appears to give some health. And I need all I can get. This game is tough!
One more question though. WTF does this psi helmet do? I mean it's in my inv. but I can't wear it.
Thanks again for the help.

You automatically have the psi helmet on at all times; it was protecting you from the psi emissions on the lab.
Once Ghost's suit gets worn down, you may want to go trade it in for the quest. You'll get a really good suit of armor as a reward.
As far as weight management goes, you really should cut back on all the extra items you carry. You should be able to keep your weight in the thirties even carrying three primary weapons.
You don't need to carry more than 3-6 health packs, and no more than 2 items of food, as they are readily available (almost all of the time, at least). You don't need to carry too much ammo, either. Just mainly use weapons that your enemies are carrying ammor for. You probably don't need to carry any more than 6-8 bandages or rad hypos either.
Also, never carry vodka around. It's a lot heavier than the rad hypos. And never carry an extra suit of armor, unless there's some crazy reason you need it.
Just keep all of your extra stuff in a stash somewhere.

Give Ghost's suit back to Sakharov! You'll receive a cool SSP-99M Suit as a reward, which is probably the best damn suit in the whole game.
And if you want to sell artifacts, it might be a good idea to hold on to them and take them all to Yantar, where you can sell them to the scientists. Unlike the other traders, Sakharov will pay you full price for the artifacts. The same goes for mutant body parts. Sakharov will buy them at full price.
Use Stone Bloods, Meat Chunks, or Souls to recover your health. Don't be fooled though, when one of those artifacts says that it will give you, e.g., 400% health, it doesn't mean that you'll get four times more hit points, it means instead that when you wear it your health will recover four times faster. Therefore you can carry a couple of those artifacts, and wear them during quiet times to recover - I'd advise you to not wear them all the time, as each of them has a penalty of -10% bulletproof cap, which obviously makes you a lot more vulnerable to bullets.
