Some Deus Ex questions.
What's the difference between knives, batons, crow bars, and other melee weapons? I noticed there's usually a difference of 1 in "base damage", but is there any difference between them? Why should I use one over the other?
And another, you can get silencers in DX, but can you put it on the sniper rifle, making it completely silent? If so, I'm spending my skill points on rifles.
Are there other ammo types for the rifle?

The main differences with the melee weapons are their rate of attack and the inventory space they take up - which may influence your choice.
The baton also does non-lethal damage (if that is important to you).
Yes, you can silence the sniper rifle, and yes, headshots at master skill are very effective. However the AI in Deus Ex has the nasty habit of sometimes knowing exactly where you shot from irrespective of how far away you are or even if they can see you.
Nope, the 30.06 rounds are it - and they're not plentiful so make your shots count.

I'm really pressed for space, so I carry the knife and baton now. I dropped the crow bar, I see no reason to carry it. The baton does non-lethal damage, you say? So it knocks out guards. Do they ever get back up, or do they stay down (like the blackjack in Thief)?
So you're saying that when you shoot the silenced sniper rifle, the guards will know where you are and run there?

If you knock out an enemy with the prod/baton/crossbow, they don't ever get up, so dont worry about that. Whether you carry a knife or baton depends on your style. Both will kill (word used for knockout when applicable) in one hit if you are standing behind an unaware enemy. With the knife you have some chance of killing an enemy from the front, while with the baton you have next to none. However, if you knock out someone from behind with the baton, they will "die" quietly, but they will go AAAGH if you stab them with the knife. So, the baton is better for stealth, and the knife is better for head-on combat. Note, however that the knife isnt all that great for combat- "Never bring a knife to a gunfight."
Most importantly, the baton opens boxes faster.
So, if you want a backup for your weapons, carry the knife. If you want to sneak around, carry the baton. The crowbar is like the knife, but it swings faster-your call. Once you get the melee weapon that takes up four slots, make room for it-it's well worth it.
As was said, there is only one kind of round for the sniper, but there are other rifles in the game. Personally, I think Weapons:Rifle should be the first skill to master.

Sniper rifle ammo is a bit on the rare side though. Fortunately, with a pile of weapon mods you can make a very effective sniper pistol. But Master skill in rifles is just insanely handy for taking out cameras and turrets in one shot.
One overlooked benefit of carrying a knife is that you don't have to mess with constantly dropping the knives you pick up off fallen enemies.

One other thing...
You can use the shock prod to take out MIB / WIBs without them detonating and destroying their inventory.
Some of them have nice equipment, including goodies like weapon upgrades, logs and in one place, I believe, a keycard.

What's an MIB and WMIB (or whatever you said)? Are those those robots?

If you don't know, you haven't met them yet. They go by those names in the game.

Ever seen the movie?
