Some British men said something funny, and were justly supressed. - by AxTng1

2006: Russell Brand jokes about Russell Brand sleeping with Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly. No-one cares.
2008: Jonathan Ross jokes about Russell Brand sleeping with Manuel's granddaughter Georgina. omfg the roof is on fire.
I just don't see enough difference in the actions to explain the extreme reactions.

I'm not sure if Brand was employed by the BBC in 2006, but that so called joke should have been seen as a warning of how low he could go.

I think the idea was more that they decided to call up her pensioner grandfather's answering machine, joke about it and tell him he might want to kill himself, then have BBC decide it was great entertainment to put on the airwaves. Hint to Russell and Jonathan: the joke itself wasn't too funny, the execution was pitiful.

It's funny, one would expect a member of a burlesque group called "The Satanic Sluts" and a guy who built a career on shamelessly ripping the piss out of an entire nation of people to be able to take a harmless joke at their expense. Or is getting your kit off and lampooning the Spanish considered high art these days?
Also, what's the betting that only about 1% of the people who have complained have actually heard the broadcast in question? Anyway, in my book, if you've managed to piss that many people off, you must be doing something right. This is worthy of a slap on the wrists at most.

To be fair, Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter aren't really the ones making a big deal out of this, are they?
I know nothing more of this whole thingy than I read in the article linked by the OP, but I get the feeling that they'd rather just laugh it of and let it be. But the media is running around going
"Oooooh! Did you hear what he said about your granddaughter? Are just gonna TAKE that? FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT"

Is that the official lib dem vision for public service broadcasting?

SD sums up my opinion, with much less defensive babble.
Also the complaint multiplication is the second most annoying thing about this story. The first most annoying is the likely cancellation of Russell's Never Mind the Buzzcocks episode. And on the subject of panel shows, is anyone else having Angus Deyton flashbacks?

Surely Manuel was not a lampooning of the Spanish people but a proud demonstration of their strength, industry, loyalty, and courage in the face of an evil, abusive, uncaring British master.

The funniest thing about all this was Brand's "apology" that was taken totally seriously all the while with a pic of Stalin over his right shoulder.
Come on guys, get with the program! :laff:
