Hi all,
Since I've just bought a spangly new laptop, I borrowed Morrowind from a friend to see if I could run it before purchasing it.
I'm quite impressed with the framerate at 800 x 600, but there are 2 very annoying graphical glitches.
Firstly, there is no local map, the window is just black with an arrow.
:edit: I'm not sure how the world map is meant to look, but it didn't mark anything on it, until I read a book about a pilgramige to look at some stones. It marked on some locations, but hasn't marked on anything since then. No towns marked on except vivec and balmorra even though i've been to some others such as peliagrad and the starting town. its as if the map wasn't working, then decided it would work properly for about 4 seconds before switching off again. At least i can SEE the world map, as opposed to the blank local map.
Secondly, there is no "paper doll" 3d figure in the inventory screen so I cannot see the items I equip etc. This isn't so serious, but its still VERY annoying.
Can anyone help? I think the problem is that my graphics card is an integrated one, but it seems to run everything else about the game just fine. Very confusing.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Peel.

Have you tried to play more than once? I found that I had similar graphics glitches occasionally, then next time I played everything would be fine. Exit the game and restart the computer, then try again. It fixed things for me. Maybe reinstall the game, if that fails.
If you tried this already and it didn't help, then I'm afraid I have no idea. Maybe one of our Moderating Tribunal will know.

Just a word of warning: I tried playing Morrowind on a laptop. It worked fine for a while, but then my operating system got completey fouled up somehow, and after some hours on technical support, it was concluded that the game had caused the problems. I also destroyed the built-in mouse buttons from jabbing too hard when I was fighting. Now I have to use an external mouse with my laptop and I don't play games on it. I bought a brand-new desktop solely to play this game on...yeah pathetic I know.

Generally Laptops have graphics cards that are much different to their desktop counterparts. Basically they need to be stripped down slighlty to reduce their power consumption. Because of this, the graphics cards use different drivers to a desktop card. You should look on the web for a driver upgrade for the video card in your laptop - look on the manufacturer's web site for your specific card. If you have an nVidia card, you can always try the Detinator Drivers, although I don't know how they will work with a laptop.

Actually, whilst i've started up morrowind several times, this is still my first "game" so to speak, so i'm going to try starting a new file, or if that doesn't work, try re-installing it and starting again.
I need to restart anyway really, because I made a few mistakes when I was choosing my initial stats.
Thieves generally need sneaking as a major or minor skill, lol........

I have a fairlt rarely occurring bug, but it's pretty bad.. if I jump on a table or chair in the corner of a room, fo example, and then try to jump off again, my character just falls right through all the textures and rooms and everything! It isn't serious, because I quicksave very often, but it's a bit startling..

hiya peelio!
i know that you were just testing out your friend's copy on your laptop, but by any chance, did you happen to patch the game? just curious, as i seem to remember hearing this complaint once or twice when the game was released. altho, i don't recall the systems (desktop or lappers) in use. :( anyway, i might suggest if you hadn't patched it, to try it. you may want to see if that will indeed correct the glitches.
do you know what version of DX is installed on your lapper? if it's below DX 8, try upgrading to DX 8.1 - also, remember to reinstall your graphics and sound card drivers after every DX update. :)
good luck! i hope you get to run MW on your lapper!
