I don't think it's laziness at all. In a game like this, checkpointing requires more work on the developer's part than manual saves because the checkpoints have to be designed into the level and playtested. It's a game design decision that the developers made and in this case I think it works well because it adds to the survival horror atmosphere of the game. The checkpoints are relatively frequent so you won't be repeating too much of the level when you die.
I don't know what gameplay videos you have been watching, but it sounds like whoever is playing is clueless. I can assure you that you can't shoot your way through the game. If you know how to play Thief, than you know how to play this game.

The checkpoints were mostly well placed, but there were a couple of times where it checkpointed right as I was being attacked, or about to be attacked, so I couldn't progress from the checkpoint and had to restart the level.
The save system is of the main reasons I haven't bought the game. Had that happen to me in Metro:LL as well, and it's annoying. Even if there are no manual saves, I don't understand why can't devs at least make the game keep the last few checkpoints, so you can reload an earlier one if the game screws up for you.
Other than that, pretty much what icemann wrote. IMO giving the player the choice in the matter is always better.

I have, at times, shot my way through the vast majority of
Thief. :D

As did I in the second game. Those damn Mechanists.
