I like (
http://handbrake.fr/) Handbrake for the whole DVD ripping / conversion to .m4v format business.

So am I the only person with no antivirus?
And only person who doesn't install tons of barely useful gimmicks for that matter?
No and no. ;)

Seconded. (Or would that be "thirded?"... By the Builder, 'tis a conundrum...)

As for computer languages, I studied Basic, Pascal, C++, and Lisp ... I haven't programed too much for a while; still not sure the best software to use to compile and run programs in the different languages on a modern computer. So if anyone has any recommendations let me know, especially for C++ and Lisp.
For C++, Microsoft do a free version of (
http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/) Visual Studio 2008 which has Visual C++ on it. This should be perfectly OK providing you're sticking to ANSI-standard C++ and only compiling for x86 PC's. Alternatively, (
http://www.bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html) Dev-CPP or (
http://wxdsgn.sourceforge.net) wxDev-CPP is available, although I haven't used it myself except for a "Hello World" program to make sure it works.
For those of you who like MatLab, I gather Python can be configured with (
http://www.scipy.org/) SciPy and NumPy so that you can do similar stuff.

VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED...will wake you up with a yelling yelp and make you pee yourself out of stark fright.
Haha, this. Scariest shit ever when you've gotten too close to the screen.
I'm going to third Foxit Reader as a speedy alternative to the now clinically obese Adobe offering, and even provide you with an (
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/) url.
Still never found anything quite as lightweight as (
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) CDex as a decent CD Ripping tool.

Anyone who actually goes without an antivirus is either a Mac user or an idiot.

The 3 years I had a virus app running it never had anything to do, so I didn't see the point in keeping one hogging system resources. But I guess it would be a good idea to have one handy in case the highly unlikely happens.
