True, there's no DirectX support in VMs yet, but the support that's coming is actually using the Wine libs. So when Wine gets DirectX support, VMs will have it too.
I think you can tell from my bitterness that I've tried to use Wine. If it worked, I wouldn't be complaining. VMs work. Hence my position.

Actually, It does use DirectX, or at least makes calls to DX9 dll files for use in an OGL wrapper or something else that's beyond me.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you never tried Winetricks when you last tried Wine, right? If you didn't, I'm pretty sure that's 99% of your problem right there.

Those dll files are WineD3D. Info: (

I haven't, I'll have to check it out once this bout of anti-Wine rage has gone out of my system.

Hmm, I'm gonna guess the ones that come packaged with Wine are reverse engineered and don't work so well yet. If you use Winetricks, it gives you a selection between two sets of D3DX9 dlls I assume are actual Windows native and you use in lieu of the defaults. I just selected the ones marked as recommended along with a few other dll sets that looked like they might be helpful, and...well...using Wine became a far, far better experience after that.

Icon Restore hasn't been mentioned. If your desktop icons are rearranged (e.g. after a brief change of resolution) and you want to put them back, this is a very useful tool.
