Society is going all to hell. - by van HellSing

My kids play with toy guns and swords, though I've never/will never own a real gun myself. Here's the thing:
We kept them away from toy weapons until the oldest one was five, then he comes around the corner one day, points his finger at me and says, "POW I SHOT YOU YOUR DEAD, BIATCH!!" (ok, the biatch was implied). Where the hell did he learn that? Not from any thing he's seen on our tv. He wasn't in day care and his playmates didn't play with toy guns either. American kids are growing up in a gun culture and all you can do is teach them that hurting people is wrong, movies are make-believe, Pat Robertson is a prick, and Sly and the Family Stone were fucking awesome. That has to be enough.

I think this is rather big. Maybe 10 years ago this kinda thing might have not been a big deal, but the problem is society is moving on and some people arn't. Fortunatly, they will be the ones first removed from the gene pool (hopefully not taking anyone else with them).
If I were you VH, I would have marched to the front of the bus and told the bus driver that the lady had a gun on board. That's just me, I like to try to manipulate society for my own personal gain:sly:
10 years? Get some perspective man. I'm talking in history, comparing now (40 years or so) to any time in history.
Toy guns don't cause people to kill people, just like video games. What really causes violence is exposure to
real violence, which Americans are witness to so little that a lot of people freeze when exposed to it.

Whatcha got ain't nothin new. This country's hard on people, you can't stop what's coming, it ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity.

While you are possibly correct, I reckon a lot more americans experience daily violence than you suggest.
Having kids myself, and seeing how they have developed, I think that things like video games, toys and all that stuff, they DO have an effect, but what? Certainly they arent evil incarnate i.e. I dont think playing violent games is going to make you go and shoot up your school or whatever, but they do have some influence on the mind, even if your child is a well adjusted member of society.

I've never met a "child" who was a well-adjusted member of society.
Perhaps later in thier mid or late teens but from age 1 to about 13, most are not "well-adjusted" members of "society". More likely "resigned" to conform (on the surface), but not wholly commited.

Society is going to hell in a handbasket. I've got conclusive proof on the matter.
I occasionally meet a friend attending UTC. It's a college campus, of course. Really nice. Kinda smarmy. I don't go there to try to feel collegiate or anything. The way things are going, I figure I'll be a janitor there in about two years.
Anyway, long story short, I'm sitting on one of the many patios that dot the landscape, and I hear one of the freshman say (and I'm not paraphrasing here, this is verbatim), "Yeah, I skipped all my classes *looks at iPod*, my playlist just isn't inspiring me today".
That one phrase, heard in passing, destroyed my faith in humanity and completely ruined my once optimistic outlook on life.

Well, at least small children are very straigtforward in their thinking, simply because their brains are not developed enough for deeper understanding of things. You could say they lack sense of humor - everything they see and hear, they take at face value, unless there's a parent around constantly telling what's real and what's make-believe, and explaining what lies under things and between the lines.
I think one of the major problems is that many parents are not present in their kids' lives nowadays. If telly and videogames are doing most of the babysitting, the kid might grow wrong in many bad ways.
Of course, easy for me to say, I don't have kids and if I did, I would keep them in the closet most of the time (but no telly!).

Society is no worse now than it ever has been. In fact, it is in all likelihood better than its been in a long time (or ever).
This is nothing more than the same bitching that every person of every generation has said about everything. What are you going to say next, that the world will end in your lifetime? I mean, everyone who's ever said that has been wrong but you might be the one!
Get the fuck over yourself.

Wrongo. The only times, when society may have been worsen off was in WorldWar times. But maybe not even those times were so bad for society.
A kid playing with a revolver? Oww, i might actually end up losing it for being one of the few persons who use head instead of ass... that was a metaphore.
Good day.
