A really simple way of doing this would be to set a flag on a thread that stops search engine bots from seeing it.
This could be put on by the OP, the mods or if enough posters include the tag: NoSearch.
Simple.

Can't you use robot.txt or something to block them?
Kolya on 7/5/2014 at 15:16
Robots.txt is a voluntary restriction.
It would be nice if that flag would allow only registered members to see the thread. But I doubt that vBulletin provides that option or that it's easy to implement. A subforum is probably the easier option.

I really need to start looking in the other sections of the forums here. Tend to just look in comm, gen gaming and the System Shock sections of the forums.
Thoughts after reading the past few pages:
I like the original idea. Would make for something different. Sort of like a temporary chat room, cept in thread form. Or that's the impression it gives to me.
On the dethtoll topic back on pages 1-2:
I must be the odd one out here, as deth's posts don't annoy me for the most part. Maybe I've just adjusted to his posting style, though I don't read through all the threads that happen here. I've found some of his posts amusing if anything, though when threads get completely side tracked into stupid arguments, fair enough. Personally, I just skip past those posts until there's stuff about the actual thread title again.
Every forum has posters that will annoy some people, just like real life. I don't agree with banning him from comm chat. He's nothing on the level that koki was (I couldn't stand that guy). I think posts should be evaluated individually per thread, and when the mods deem them as going too far / inappropriate then by all means take action. I also think the "go get a job" comment was uncalled for.

There musty be some way of blocking unsigned in bots trawling the forums.
Al_B on 11/5/2014 at 17:25
Yes, it could probably be done by user agent sniffing and adding a plugin to prevent browsing to certain forums / threads but it would end up a messy situation that wouldn't be guaranteed to do what you want.
I'm not greatly in favour of the member's only chat area as it fragments the forum and prevents new potential members from seeing some of the interesting discussions we have. Some members also browse logged-off and only log in when they see something interesting they want to comment on and they would also miss that opportunity.
However, I do understand that it does have some merits so I've created a "Member's Chat" forum on a trial basis to see whether it's useful in practice.

It might encourage more people to join up, who knows.

Can I just reiterate how much I hate the the private subforum? I mean, what is the point? Nobody cares about this forum enough to go doxing Subjeff for his Daily Mail headline posts, and CCCTony has been more obnoxious than ever now that he thinks he can post his tinfoil hat bullshit with impunity.
I think it needs to be closed and its threads moved to CommChat or whatever's appropriate, because it's mostly been a vehicle for Subjeff to start up arguments about shit he doesn't get.

I agree that it kind of resembles the Bait Forum right now, but since there was enough support to warrant creating it, let's at least give it a while longer to decide what it is, given that one of the admins had to spend time figuring out how to make it unsearchable and then set it up. Also, if you don't want to get into spats with SubJeffrey in there, just avoid the whole subforum for a bit.
