Scots was just lamenting what once was, I for one have come to terms with what these forums are now, purely cos I still really enjoy and have an interest in gaming, and this place fulfills that need.
For those that have moved on from such pursuits, ttlg holds little to keep people here. I just wish there was less acrimony and more tolerance.
And for the record, this NOT a "wah comm chat used to be so much better in the old days" post. Just purely an observation.

But Brethren was just being antagonistic in the Dark Souls thread
The question of why DS belongs on an LGS forum was bound to come up, deth could've taken it as his que to explain why he thinks it belongs here, like Renz does further down the thread, but instead he uses it as an excuse to start being offensive. And after Renz does offer up points for the Souls series inclusion deth just uses those points as a springboard to throw more insults. It's obvious that he is more interested in having flame wars than discussions. That Brethren is also being antagonistic is no excuse.

Clearly there still is a demand for social interaction here, which might benefit from not being put on display. Also group hugs.

IMO - dethtoll pretty much represents the worst side of internet message boards in today's world. He's extremely rude, obnoxious, argumentative, and he can't handle any criticism. He relishes and plays up the role of being the angry, rage-filled hate machine, and flings insults around haphazardly and often to just about anybody who posts on any of the boards here. He's an attention whore to the worst degree.
I wonder if he ever reads his posts and wonders why no one else "communicates" the way he does. Probably not.
I have zero tolerance for people like him. Somewhere in there there might be a semi-intelligent person, but you'd never know it.
As to why certain users condone and let him continue to just freely do his "thing" is beyond me. But as you can see by some of the responses above, not everyone approves.

Oh
well then, why don't I just fuck off forever, would that make you guys happy? Because I don't have to put up with this.
You guys wanna know why I'm so angry? It's this shit right here:

agreeing with henke here, cos he is pretty much the voice of tolerance and reason around here, and it takes a lot for him to call you out on your offensive bullshit. For one stop swearing so much. Another get a job or something and spend less time on these forums and playing games, you're a grown man for gods sake.
Two dont ever abuse Scots you have no idea
Three dont bother replying to this post cos I already know what you are gonna vomit out.
"GIT A JORB" as if that's something easily accomplished -- what do you think I've been trying to do for two and a half years, bananahead? I'm under no obligation to explain myself to anyone and that includes the job situation here. And trust me, Scots earned the comments I gave him. I'm not going to accept someone who never posts in here coming in here
out of the blue to tell me I'm an awful person, and that includes so-called "CommChat Kru" members like Scots. I'm sick of so-called "regulars" getting special treatment while I get shit on. He's never around, I am, yet I'm the one told to shut up when he's abusing me? I don't have to put up with that, especially if it's YOU telling me that. I've been here for almost ten years am I enough of a loser to be in your club yet?!
Gotta love the "don't reply to me ur predictable" comment too because that is just so typical of you. "I'm going to sit here and insult you but you're not allowed to get upset!"

All I have to say to this is every time I think we could be friends you bust out another idiotic, elitist, whiny post and I want to strangle you. I'll grant that out of a lot of my posting lately I've been especially hostile to you. Ever wonder why? I'll tell you why: Because you're a Thiefgen escapee with all the attendant neuroses and your interactions with me have shown just how much of a dipshit you are. Go back to Thiefgen and stay there, your complete shitting in the DS subforum thread was unwarranted and really cemented my dislike of you. Especially considering that when I did elaborate on why the series deserves a subforum you just dismiss it. And
I'm the monster?
Fuck this place. I'm done.

@all: As much as I dislike the angry-by-default attitude and the hostile stereotype deth apparently has of all Thief fans, he is harmless compared to what some of you are capable of. So don't be so quick with the judgement. Dethtoll is a smart guy and he can be very helpful and friendly when his attitude doesn't get in the way. It's not so hard to see that. Telling someone to get a job when you know nothing about his real life is out of line in my opinion.
@deth: I don't think anyone wants you to leave. They want you not to vent your anger on the forums so much. It's hard to tell you that though without fuelling your anger.
@dema: Do you still remember any sites that had the sort of IRC like feed you were talking of?

I just wanted to say I didn't mind Draxil posting in that thread and don't think he/she was trolling. I like discussing contentious issues with people I disagree with when they come out and say what they think and why, and Draxil did that. CommChat is somewhat hostile to social conservative views, so there is a tendancy when someone holds a conservative view on some issue to avoid stating it directly, out of fear of being dismissed as a right wing loony. Instead, I see people making those arguments via proxy, e.g. a strawman, a hypothetical, an opinion or quote sourced elsewhere. I think we waste too much thread space debating the validity of these proxy arguments rather than sharing and discussing our views. So it was kind of refeshing to see someone with a contrary view just say it and explain it. Contrast that with the usual CCCToad/Tony T routine of pasting web links to some pundit whose opinion I couldn't care less about.
(assuming you're reading this Tony: nobody wants to read your links or get sidetracked debating your strawmen; if you can offer a straightforward original argument in your own words that's on topic, then I'll read it).
Getting back to Kolya's suggestion, I see how it could help encourage more open discussion but I also wonder if people will be less inclined to make thoughtful posts with good arguments if they know the thread will auto-delete. It might just lead to more people engaging in the poo throwing and less substance. I don't have any objection to trying it, but I am a bit skeptical.
If there is a consensus that we want more and better discussions on social, political, and other potentially contentious issues, then it seems obvious that we need fewer people lurking and more people posting. I think that collectively, we need to be more tolerant and civil while still allowing for healthy debate. CommChat has never been very good at tolerating a diversity of viewpoints, and it used to be somewhat of a tradition to beat people down with how wrong they are until they agree or bail out. If we continue to do that, participation will continue to wither. I know I can argue a point pretty strongly sometimes, so I will try to have a softer approach.
We may want to consider whether the moderation should be more heavy handed specifically in these kinds of threads. If some posts had been deleted in the Eich thread as soon as dethtoll and SE started spiraling into a fight, I wonder if that would have set a different tone for the thread.
PigLick on 30/4/2014 at 00:55
Comm chat used to self-moderate to a certain extent, but its no longer the hub of discussion it used to be(obviously).
@Kolya - Yeh my "get a job" remark was a little below the belt, I was just tired of dethtolls offensive behaviour and language. Thanks for pulling me up on that one. That is the last I will say about the matter.

Browser multiplayer game sites tend to have them. I couldn't find the good one I remember, but a random google search brings up (
http://www.boardgame-online.com/) this one, which I guess gives you the gist of the idea, if you focus on the chat comments & not so much the system comments.

Seconded.
That's the last thing I'll say on the matter, now back to the regularly scheduled Social subforum-discussion/animal butts.
