The Australian Womens Football team have just been knocked out of the World Cup after a sterling performance. I just looked up the score in their loss to Brazil, 3:2(2:1). Not being a round ball fan, can someone explain what the numbers inside the brackets mean?

Aggregate score. They were already down 2 goals to one, so they needed to win that match by at least 3 goals to progress... I think.
For example, England beating Germany 2-1 in the second stage of a two-leg game might only bring them to a draw, if the aggregate score was (1-2 against from the previous game). It gets more complicated when they start weighting home and away goals.
The female socceroos put on a good performance, I hear. One of the females from the squad is the daughter of a colleague here at work, actually.

That doesn't seem to make sense. They were playing in the quarter finals which is a knockout stage. Win you advance, lose you go home.

Huh. Then I have no idea. Actually, aggregate scores usually proceed the actual score in brackets as well, so that also throws me off. It's usually 3-2 (3-5) on aggregate if the previous game was 0-3 against... I think.
Forgive me, I'm not the sportiest person in the world.

The only sport I played (and was only mediocre) was basketball.

Perhaps the bracketed score was the halftime score?

DING! DING! DING!
I think we have a winner. I looked at the Norway v China score 1:0(1:0). The only score was in the 32nd minute.

Good one, matt.
crunchy, I never particularly played, spectated nor followed sport in any format... a little different. :D
