I'll ask first and explain why second. I'm on my first playthrough of SoC, I've just entered he dark valley, and I haven't patched the game at all. If I patch now, will I have to restart? Is it really, really essential to patch before I finish the game?
The reason I haven't patched the game yet is because I can't. And no, I don't have an illegal copy. The family computer's disc drive is playing up - essentially, it freezes the computer when a disc spins up. So I installed SoC on my crappy laptop, and copied the files onto the desktop which could actually play it. The game works, but when I run a patch exe, it can't find the game. So, no patches for me. If it really, really is essential that I patch before finishing the game, then I won't bother to go any further, because from what I've heard I'll need to restart. Bear in mind that I've always intended to play through the game twice - once on an easier difficulty, and a second time doing things 'right' on a high difficulty. To get it patched, I'll either have to wait to repair the disc drive, get myself an external disc drive, or just buy the game on Steam :P.

patching up makes your savegames invalid.
i think even the first patch ever released for SOC broke your savegames.
most mods run and are made for patch 1.04 or 1.05. 1.04 would be even better if you want to enjoy most of the mods and better game stability. 1.05 was only a multiplayer patch and some mods like AMK don't work with the 1.05 version.
you could try looking up some registry keys for SOC, I'm sure the patcher only searches for a certain class/key string in the registry to find STALKER. also, why not install from an image, I'm sure someone could just copy the original DVD for you.
- if you don't wanna loose all progress leave the installation as it is.
- patch up to 1.04 later for the mods or replay on high
- i finished stalker with no problems unpatched on my first playthrough (others did not, it IS a buggy game)
- if you wanna play mods, don't get the steam version since you will get the 1.05 version if you want or not - and won't be able to play AMK for example

I've never played unpatched SoC, but I read that, bugs aside, unpatched game had quite different balance, prices and effects of items.

Thanks for the info, guys. Mothra - if I install Stalker on my laptop, could I find the registry info on there and then reproduce it on the desktop?
Sounds like I won't be getting the Steam version, then. I guess I'll patch up to 1.04 after I've finished my current playthrough. Thanks again.
Oh, and since I haven't said it before here, Stalker rules!

I guess that would what I would try. I would guess it's under current-user / software / gsc games or something like this. I guess the patch only searches for the base directory to install into and maybe the startup location to put a link to the readme there.

Or you could make .iso from the disc you have on the laptop, copy it over to the desktop and install from that via alcohol 120% or daemon tools. Then patch it up and get the fixed exe(or a miniimage, whatever it is for SoC) from gamecopyworld.
You are leglly allowed to make a copy of a game for personal use, so I don't think there's anything illegal in all that, if it bothers you(And it shouldn't since you already
bought the game).

I patched my SoC and didn't know about the save games. But since I was halfway through the game, I downloaded a trainer so I could sort of get back to the same spot I was at on my save games.
Get the ISO of the disc like Koki said, and then install the file with alcohol 120 or something.
Just look for a trainer after you patch, and get back to where you are, and then turn the trainer off.
Here's a trainer for patch 1.0005 (
