I always viewed the loss of Garrett's eye as a sign of his vulnerability. He's good at what he does but not infallible. I can only wonder what sort of KUH-RAZY shenanigans will play out in relation to him acquiring his nu-eye. Perhaps a stray dry ice arrow? :tsktsk:
That too, it showed him that for all his skill, his pride and greed can easily be his downfall... I think he learned a lot from that experience so as to not allow himself to go through the exact same thing... he became more cautious and careful. Trust became very difficult for him, and quite understandably, it took him awhile to become comfortable with Viktoria. For his nu eye, I have no doubt he ruptured one of those canisters holding all that liquid nitrogen, probably emptied right in his face and froze the eye out of his head. Alternatively, I would recommend a safer and more common thing to Nugarrett for putting out torches... and it's as close as a nearby well.
Water. Too obvious?

I think obviousness is the reason for the change up. I mean if you were a guard taking your nightly patrol through the halls of an expensive mansion filled to bursting with valuables, and you saw a big puddle of water just below a torch you could've sworn was lit not even 5 minutes ago, wouldn't that make you a little suspicious?
See, dry ice doesn't leave any evidence behind. It freezes out the flame, then evaporates completely. It's a far better material for a thief trying to sneak about without being seen.
...this is, of course, assuming both aren't equally stupid options for putting out flames. Water arrows are one of those things that sounds like a cool idea when you first hear about them, but get a little dumb the more you think about it. Dry Ice Arrows are just about on that same level. Neither one of them would actually work in a real life situation.

And here i was thinking games were about escaping from reality...

Well, Fantasy genre games, anyway.

Who says that the water arrows leave a puddle. Maybe they "explode" into a water mist cloud. Water mist is particularily effective at putting out fires with less amount of water, see impulse fire extinguishers ((
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USCjBR_U2IA)). A mist cloud won't leave a puddle (at worst some moisture that could dry quickly). Given the size of water crystals, and the presumable water amount it could hold, using the more effective mist extinguishing method would be suitable.
Plausible enough (if you can buy the crystals exploding/bursting like that)? ;)

If it's dark, how would they see it?

calling it a "reboot/re-invention" does? Is it NuGarrett's make-up?
NuGarrett's outward expression is only a reflection of the fundamental change in personality and behavior that is inconsistent with the psychological motivations of Garrett...thereby rendering him an impostor, and disqualifying him from canon.

Is it because elemental crystals were replaced by mechanical constructions of a flash bomb calibre?
If the magical elemental crystals are replaced with mundane, non-magical counterparts, then surely the magical elemental planes of existence will disappear, as well...thereby fundamentally altering the metaphysical system and cosmology of The THIEF Universe...and thus disqualifying NuThief's contention for legitimacy.

Except that "Water Arrows" use
magical water, which is suspended and released from a crystallized matrix upon impact...and magical elemental properties and their effects are simulated within the context of a different universe...one with its own unique metaphysical laws and relationships.

None. What's the relevance? That's not the escape I get from a favorite video game. It's still part of this world and I would not be able to forget the laws of physics or my financial situation for a second. There's no reset for
this game.

Damn you...
Okay. Wait a second. I've got this.
Guards can relight torches, right? Well, when they make the attempt, they notice that the torch is soaking wet, and hear the splash of the puddles as they walk through the water on the floor.
So there.
