I can see the aftermath of the new game's release being more acrimonious than what's already occured. I'm finding it very difficut to consider it a genuine Thief game.

It's alternate universe at best. We already have lots of people confusing FMs with official canon just because they really like those FMs no matter what they do, and people 'round here who like EM's efforts no matter what are already mismatching point with counterpoint, so I imagine people who really like T4 trying to debate yet another apple to a bowl of oranges for many years to come.

Yeah, not canon. It's a reboot, so it's starting it's own canon. If I like it and the game is playable, then I'll play it as it's own entity, but regardless, it will always be it's own game. Hopefully one that is fun to play, immersive, and is a lot like my favorite games.

I don't see how T4 could ever be considered canon. As jtr & Hewer have already said, it's a reboot, an alternate Thief universe type of game. There've even been hints from EM that they're changing the story of how Garrett got the scar over his eye, as well as so many other aspects of the original Thief games that T4 could never be considered canon. If the game fails miserably however, it could just be ignored. :p

Yes...It will be the NuThief Universe, a lesser shadow of the unique and wondrous THIEF Universe...One can only sing songs of sorrow, at EM's foolish squandering of such a mighty opportunity.

You are clinging to this "reboot" label as if it was the only meaningful thing that came from EM. The references to the canon (return to THE City, the river, Stone Market, Keeper statues) are at least as striking. You get all wrought up about how their claims of "pleasing the fans" is empty babble but their apparently differentiated understanding of "reboot" is something you guys totally ignore for sake of the very word. I won't go into the going-in-paranoid-circles/elitist-arrogant thinking/people claiming what Thief is without having properly played it/ex-post glorification stuff that disgusts me for some weeks now and really put me off this sub forum if it wasn't for the actual news that came here from time to time. :nono:

HAHAHAHAHAHA!
All righty.

I've been asking myself the same question and at this point can't come up with anything better than "probably an alternate universe where several pieces of the lore of the original games is canon, but the tone and overall feel of the universe is different". In some interviews / previews, it's clear that the basics are there: characters, places, even a few events. Garrett already has his scar, he "comes back" to the city after a long hiatus, the era of hammerites and mechanists is acknowledged but put far behind.
So, definitely a sequel but cherry-picking only whatever they like from the existing canon, which does come off as slightly disrespectful.
It's not a reboot in the common acception of the term: a reboot describes the relaunch of a game in a world shaped differently where none of the previous elements of story and lore hold true, usually retelling some of the events that happened in the original game. See Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider trilogy for example (I would argue that TR:2013 is not a reboot by the way, simply a prequel to their already-existing reboot), Alone in The Dark or Prince of Persia.

I'm curious whether the map project should consider its levels as canon for mapping the City, placing them beside past missions. I mean is it basically the same City at least? For the previous games, we were very good to reconcile what looked like contradictory information in at least a logical way, so I think it could be done. But maybe it depends on just what these new levels are like, or broad things about the City (do we still have a river and bridges, etc...).

You can have a reboot which still utilises elements of the same lore, etc. The new Thief is deliberately not a continuation of the previous games, and has substantially altered the look, feel, and tone of the location, speech, and character from the previous games. Even just the way it's called "Thief" without a subtitle or anything... EM haven't used the word 'reboot' but that is effectively what this is.
