can you imagine if the original Star Trek was held to that standard? It wouldn't have made it past the first episode. ESP, what a dumb first episode. I can't believe the network OK'd that instead of The Cage. Really, a third of Star Trek was really hard to stomach. I mean, don't get me wrong, I think it's legendary for what it accomplished at the time, but...Spock's Brain? Uggh. Moan. Doctor Severin? Oowww, my stomach hurts. Only about 1/4 to 1/2 of all the 79 episodes were good to really good.
Same with shows like The Pretender. Some were really really good, others were totally phoning it in. Tommy Thompson re-worked episodes of Quantum Leap half the time. What made me almost puke was a Pretender episode about thrillseekers on motorcycles getting re-worked for Pacific Blue. Now the thrillseekers were on bicycles. Ugghhh.
Yeh, so I would agree that some shows have episodes that are worth watching even though many episodes suck.

Oh, sure. I mean I struggled through a quagmire of shitty episodes of TNG when I was a teenager - whether it was due to lower standards or having a ton more time on my hands or a combination of the both, I'm not sure - but I sure don't have that kind of time anymore or the ability to stomach shitty TV, so I guess all that tells me is that most shows are held up in ratings by the 15-25 demographic (+ bored housewives/unemployed dole scum) not anything inherently true about the standards of TV.

You're right about that. I think that's why the next Star Trek is by J.J. convoluted and never taking you anywhere Abrams, and it looks like a rework of Star Wars and Space:90210.

Dollhouse was reportedly jerked around a fair bit, in a "Plot!? What is this? Dushku in tight clothes is why we give you money Joss. Get to work!" kind of way. They had to make two pilots and all sorts of crap.
I've never seen it but the fuss surrounding it is pretty amusing all by itself. Besides, it's Fox. They'd have to throw their money in the street to even begin to atone for their sins.

The Wire is an exception to this rule. It took me pretty much 12 episodes into the first season to truly appreciate the series. Along the way its pretty hard going to keep track of whats going on and appreciate the myriad of storylines.
Hell, the actual story in The Wire doesnt kick in proper until around the end of the first season - so apart from the genius of the show its one of those few ones which require the viewer to sit down and pay attention. It could quite have easily fallen flat on its face though.
Speaking of which, how about Generation Kill? That right there is an amazing show...hell, an amazing experience since I'd venture that it passes the boundry of a "tv show" and into "documentary" realms of watchability.

I watched the last 4 episodes of Dollhouse yesterday (ie: ep 6 to ep 10). While the first episode of the season was utter bullshit I found myself really getting into the concept and characters in these latter episodes. Well worth a watch - just ignore the first 6.
Dude, I was just coming to ask how the show is. I read a little about it yesterday, and JW's involvement intrigued me.

Like I said, its good. The series pretty much changes direction completely in episode 6. Episode 9 is some of the finest writing I've seen for a while from Joss Whedon.
Theres 2 more episodes left of the season so I urge y'all to watch it!

Chuck season (series???) finale tonight! Woohoo! Please NBC, don't cancel the show. Please, all you TV execs out there on the broadcast TV scene, I know people watch the reality drivel and it's cheap to make, but please let us keep some good programs with real actors now and then.
