When I was "growing up", Alternative meant any rock that wasn't oldies rock, classic rock, hard rock, or metal. It was new, but it wasn't hard (like Metalica or GNR was), nor was it 80s-90s rock done by 70s rock bands who were still doing music. Of course, any band that didn't fit any preexisting definition got lumped into "alternative", so "alternative" as a definition became pretty useless.
That's the way I saw it anyway.
