The James Blunt effect?

Yeah, Alternative used to
be alternative and now it's just another mainstream genre that's
called alternative even though it isn't anymore.

Well then question 2: wtf is Indie?
Indie means independently produced. I don't think they've really turned that into a genre name yet, but give 'em time.

I always thought it was guitar music that doesn't rock enough to be rock.

Alternative isn't really a genre, it's more of a catch-all phrase for successful music that isn't particularly pop. Compare these examples:
Beyoncé: Pop
Radiohead: Alternative
It's basically the other half of popular music. The two are interchangeable. For instance, Radiohead have written some great pop tunes, and Beyoncé has appeared in alternative mashups like Smeels Like Teen Booty. Like I said, it isn't a particular sound, scene or genre, just a loose, redundant term that doesn't really mean anything anymore.

I don't know how they decide now, but bizarrely in the UK mainstream poppy stuff like Kylie Minogue and Steps used to get into the indie chart while bands generally considered indie like Carter USM didn't. It was all down to who distributed the music- if your distributor was independent you were indie.

What's "Alternative" music?
I think everybody here nailed it, no matter what their answer is... "alternative" seems to have become whatever you want it to be.
A late 80s band I was in was refered to as "alternative". Even then when I asked what the exact definition of "alternative" was, the answer was:
"Whatever isn't ... uh... not-alternative."
Someone else decided that we were a "Big Shirt Band".
Figure that one.

Independent.
Bands, singer-writers who are not with a major record label. Those who produce thier own CD's, songs etc.
(

That isn't independent, that is homegrown
EDIT: Speaking of which, Blackie, why don't you have a CD for me to get my mitts on son. And I'm not saying that because you do a good Cash, but because I'm in this fantasy world where you'll do Kind Hearted Woman or something. A boy can dream, a boy can dream

It is called "Indie". Most is "homegrown" as you say, and I do have a CD available, but it doesn't have Kind Hearted Woman on it.
I'm too cheap to pay the license fees for copyrighted material, but there is a lot of stuff from the 20's and earlier that is pretty good.
