This would not have been an issue if the guy didn't have a history of being a sleazebag. That's why people take this accusation seriously. Someone who grabs girls' asses and distributes nude photos is more suspect than someone without that history. And even then, if he had simply put out a statement and let the discussion run out, contained in a single thread, this would not have become this kind of a shitstorm. Instead, he chose the Streisand effect.
Also, I'm not sure if you are seriously suggesting that victims of sexual harrassment/assault should just keep quiet about it unless they go to the police. If someone steals from you, even if you don't go to the police, you can still tell people around you that you've been robbed. And that's what the girl did -- she told her friends in a private Facebook post, which was then screengrabbed and leaked.
Also, what about the lives ruined by persistent sexual harassment, because people are too scared to talk about it? This just gives people like Harvey Weinstein free reign to do what they want.

Sorry, when I'm speaking on this I'm talking generally, not about the NeoGAF thing specifically. I'm not about to defend that guy.
And in response to your edit, my concern is the public response to the accusation rather than the accusation itself. Women shouldn't be afraid to speak out on genuine instances, but the public taking action against the accused shouldn't follow the accusation until there's evidence to back it up (which, by the way, a convincing body of relevant individuals stepping forward to corroborate the accusation counts as).
If it's revealed that some people got away with using #MeToo dishonestly against targets of opportunity, it will serve to delegitimize the whole movement.
And in response to your OTHER edit, as I've said, the problem isn't with the accusations being made. If they're true, that'll come out pretty quickly, as it has done. The problem is with the public acting on the accusation before it's been proven. And to reiterate, I'm talking generally, not about Weinstein or NeoGAF guy specifically. The evidence for Weinstein at least accumulated pretty damn quickly after the accusation was made.

Now that I've seen some more of the account.
This is the kind of situation nothing good will come from. ASSUMING everything is true as stated, what he did reads like a fairly typical case of "Nice Guy" entitlement syndrome where the guy is socially inept enough to feel like that if he acts a certain way, pedestals a girl hard enough, and then is a good enough friend for long enough that he deserves sex.....and then as a result of that entitlement felt angry when he was denied something that he felt he had earned.
What a lot of guys without proper masculine guidance haven't learned is that sex is a sales game. Just like in sales, nobody is obligated to give you what you want. It's incumbent on you and nobody else to market what you've got well enough that other people want to give you what you're after of their own free will.

Trance, I certainly would like to live in a world where there is immediately a rush to believe victims and where accusations are proven to be true pretty quickly. Unfortunately, in this world the justice system is of little help, victim blaming is the norm and telling about it often leads to nothing or hurts the victim. Just have a look on the links Fafhrd posted, if you don't believe me.

You should read about John Leslie. UK presenter, accused several times by a bunch of women of various things. Never found guilty. Career ruined all the same.
I personally know of a doctor who was accused of inappropriately touching a female patient. When word got out a few (three I think) other women came forward to say the same. Guilty, right? We'll it turns out the first woman had done the same to her last 3 doctors and they were all found innocent. And the other women. This doctor had. never. ever. met. them. The case was kicked out.
I do not believe in anything but evidence. I do not think it is enough that more than one person accuses because people, in general, are nuts.

"NeoGAF Goes Dark After Sexual Misconduct Allegation Against Owner" <-- article linked in literally the third post of this thread
I've heard of the story before, so I glossed over any article links here.

It's true, I'm there! Pleasant surprised to see some life here, though. Will try to make more of a habit of visiting.

I think for the majority of us here, this is still our favorite forum and we check on it a few times a day (at least). RPS I check on once a day usually. RPS has more of a main stream gaming kinda vibe to it, mixed in with more hardcore gamers which makes for good reading of really long threads on occasion + there is a bit more Kickstarter discussion there.
