So... - by thefonz

Well my two week vacation in Canada and NYC is over and I'm back in London.
However an interesting aside to last week was that I've been offered a job in NY.
Its an internal move with my bank and means a ton of more responsibility, harder work, more cash and generally a massive progression in my career.
So what are the pros and cons of New York as you can see or know of?
Are there any folks here who are living there?
I love the city for the lifestyle and general social life, and on that side of things my mind is made up...
Anyway, suggestions most welcome thank you please.

What I love about NYC: Concerts of every kind of venue, every kind of genre, every night (particularly nice for a jazz fan like me); your circle of friends is bound to be the most eclectic mish-mash of awesome people from all walks of life; regular star-sightings; meat comes from the corner butchers, bread from the corner bakery, wine from the corner wine shop, flowers from the corner florist, cheese from Murray's (!), haircut the corner barber ... none of it ever more than 2 blocks away, it just feels like you're living right; exploring/walking the City ... a neverending adventure you can expect any random time you want to do it; the City knows how to reward the extra money you make working there. And you can get lucky: because of rent-control I rented a 25x25-foot loft on 5th Ave & 9th St for $550/mo! (market price is $1300/mo for 10'x11' in the same area). Also a City that's good for expats.
What I hate about NYC: winter (except the Park is lovely in the snow, and virtually empty); corporate culture can be laughably dehumanizing until you train yourself to be what would appear inhuman any other place; it can be an alpha-male sort of culture, so be ready to be aggressive to get something done ... I mean, that's a bit of a caricature. It's not too different from anywhere else ... they do the same basic work, but more hours. Once you get used to the lifestyle, you can feed off the energy. That has to be something you're prepared to do or psyched about, though, I'd think. You should be in a good frame of mind to have a little edge, and that it can fit your personality (that is, your nature isn't going to rebel after a while).
If you're already in that kind of industry, though, I'm thinking you're going to be energized by the better responsibility and advancement. I would jump at the chance, but I love the City anyway.

Congrats fonz. There are a few TTLGers who live there. RBJ for sure, but I don't know who the others are. He can't be the only one though. You're only been in London for 2years or so haven't you? Sounds like pretty rapid promotion!

It's horribly expensive to live in or near NYC.
Be prepared to spend a significant amount of time on the subway each morning.
On the plus side, you'll never run out of new things to do in your free time.

Also, be sure to say "Thank you master, may I have another?" If they beat you afterwards.
Peanuckle on 5/9/2007 at 02:39
Well, if you call them "master," you might get something you weren't expecting:eww:
You could always carry a stun prod or mace. But this is about the nice things of New York!
Just don't buy food from any shady looking street vendors.:p
Turtle on 5/9/2007 at 03:03
Wrong.
The shady looking street vendors have the best food.
