So... no World Cup thread yet? (also featuring TTLG fantasy world cup game) - by D'Arcy

I'd want to say it, especially if I thought it would give my team an advantage.

I've heard/read about 50 different variations, of differing 'foulness' at this stage. Everything is basically unconfirmed.
That didn't stop good old Radio 5 running a phone-in last night, which basically went along the lines of:
"We have no idea what Materazzi said to Zidane - but hey, he flipped, so it must have been THE MOST RACIST THING YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE, right listeners?"
That quickly developed into:
"Materazzi is a blatant racist"
Which became:
"God, those racist, diving Italians eh?"
All of which remained based on footage of ZIDANE HEADBUTTING SOMEONE. There was no further news beyond what everyone had seen on tv at this point. Materazzi (and all of Italy by association) was guilty of being a diving racist because Zizou headbutted him.
Smooth detective work, great British public.
(A few other people were pointing out how stupid this all was, fortunately. BUT NOT ENOUGH.)

And that is why I love Radio 5. The kind of blatant nationalist hypocracy that StD can only dream of.

I didn't expect it from Radio 5, really. It's more Talksport's remit (although at least with them you know half of it is a wind-up).

Hmm, must be the callers that have soured me on Radio 5. Talksport I don't bother listening to when it regards england.

Somewhat ironic, considering your every other post in this thread has been brimming with a hatred for the English that dwarves any nationalistic prejudices I may have!

Yes, I unashamedly take the piss. :( It's a weakness.
Dunno about "brimming with hatred", but if I've given that impression then my campaign's been more successful than I thought.

What exactly is "diving" anyway? Falling down and pretending to be injured?
Shevers on 10/7/2006 at 22:35
Falling over to try to con the referee into a foul.
Whether it also counts if you've been fouled and make a meal of it, I'll leave in Paz's experienced hands.

Diving is embellishing a fall. Therefore embellishing a real hit in order to draw a penalty is also considered a dive.
As for Z's reaction, some of the best players are really good at it because they're emotionally into the match and want to win at all costs. It's hard to control yourself in the heat of the moment when you play with such emotions. We usually see it in hockey, a known dirty/sneaky player angers another, the other retaliates, only the retaliator gets the penalty. In hockey also when a team loses a playoff series they look like retarted zombies for a good 10 minutes because they put everything they had in winning, that's sometimes better to see out of your team than shrugging it off and saying "aw well, next time"
