So... no World Cup thread yet? (also featuring TTLG fantasy world cup game) - by D'Arcy

It's quite weird, Mr. Ronaldo didn't really dive that much against Angola or Iran (that I recall - certainly no more than player x or y, nor in such a dramatically poor fashion), he didn't play against Mexico and played on pretty manfully DESPITE having the shit kicked out of him in the Holland game. Until he went off, due to having the shit kicked out of him.
Enter England.
He goes down a bit in this game (still not in quite such a blatant way) and at a vital moment says "excuse me ref, that pudding-headed boy has just trodden on my mate's family jewels". Then he plays WINK MURDER with Scolari/Rooney, which is apparently quite shocking to English people, who remember some ill-advised attempts at sexual fumbling during such darkness-based party games. Or something.
Cue over-reaction against Ronaldo from some areas of DA MEDJA in the UK. Instead of, say, the gonk who got himself sent off.
At this point, the Boy Wonder dons an even darker persona than usual, seems to embrace the boos of the crowd in Portugal-France and plays his socks off - COMBINED with some hilarious diving antics, as if to ice the curious cake with the message "hello, I am now playing up to my image". At this point, he's not even bothering to draw any contact from players before falling over, which, as anyone knows, is just a shoddy attitude toward quality diving.
See also; 3rd place play off match.
Mysterious!
(not saying he went from Swotty McSwot the teacher's pet to TEEN REBEL here - plainly not so - but he definitely got worse after all the attention)

Materazzi is Italian. Zidane is Algerian.
No, Zidane is from La Castellane, on the northern part of Marseille. It's a tough district where he grew up. And no one can insult your family and get away with it.(Zidane should have ignored this insect, though).
Zidane just thought he was young again like this one ! : :laff:

Funny seeing big guy Materazzi "diving backwards" blown by a powerful balding head. :laff:
After that, LOTTO TIME !!!
Anyways, no one can forget Zidane's career.
Maradona had "his God's hand", too. Zidane, his mega-supra powerful head, so beware. :cheeky:

Zidane had already done something similar when he was at Juventus. He brutally assaulted a Bayern player, if I'm not mistaken.

Just voted in the poll.
My money's on Italy.

I think Zidane has something like 15 straight red cards in his career now, which is rather an impressive haul - and thanks to the player of the tournament votes taking place before the final, he's also won the golden ball award! Which is pretty odd, even ignoring his headbutt of champions:
vs Switzerland and South Korea = anonymous
vs Togo = suspended
vs Spain and Brazil = amazing
vs Portugal = average
vs Italy = pretty good + VIOLENCE, but the award isn't based on this game anyway
Obviously at this point I should also post a youtube of "Australian training for the World Cup", but footage of players getting on a plane isn't very exciting. As well as it being extremely childish.

Cannavaro or Pirlo deserved the award a lot more than Zidane, in my opinion.

I can see this bitter rivalry lasting another 4 years easily, Paz ;)

Yes, describing Materazzi as an insect, there does seem to be this trend in France of criticising the victim rather than the perpetrator. There was no excuse for what Zidane did, none whatsoever. I think most of us stopped reacting violently to UR MOM insults in primary school. It was an utter disgrace and I'm somewhat bemused as to why Zidane wasn't arrested for a criminal assault.

Word. Cannavaro was head and shoulders better than Zidane who had one and a half good games.

Yup. Cannavaro's defending was phenomenal. I always love Pirlo but I think Cannavaro had to shade it. And I also think I have to put in a word for Midfield General Gattuso, he's got to be challenging Makelele for the best holding midfielder in the world.
I've also been hearing some first hand reports from a guy I know in Italy. He was part of a full-on riot. The scenes he was describing are more evidence of the raw passion for football in Italy that makes me so happy that they won this final. :thumb:
