So... no World Cup thread yet? (also featuring TTLG fantasy world cup game) - by D'Arcy

Nah, instead we have Rooney who has the ability to barge through defences like an HGV :)

No, not even him. He's probably skilled considering the standards of english players, but just compare him with latin players and you'll see there's a big difference.
The :( was because just as he was starting to look like a genuinely threatening player, Chelsea bought him and have put a massive block on his development by, well, not playing him.
Anyway, every football thread ever on TTLG turns into a StD ALL LIVERPOOL PLAYERS ARE GODS versus D'Arcy HAHAHA ENGLISH FOOTBALL LOL. So don't.
Just don't.

I'm in the Metro league. Hoping to finish in the top half this time!

Why isn't Bulgaria included in the poll?
David on 27/5/2006 at 14:31
They're not in the competition.
Plus there's not enough options to include everyone.
Plus they wouldn't win it.
Fingernail on 27/5/2006 at 14:39
because they totally suck at everything, especially making FMs
yah boo
Bulgarian_Taffer on 27/5/2006 at 14:46

And my FMs don't suck.

Bulgaria were pretty awesome in '94 - you need another Stoichkov.
I think somewhere in between ENGLAND COMPETE WITH ZE BEST and LOL YOU CAN'T DRIBBLE FOR SHIT there lies an interesting point which I've heard Tim Vickery talking about before. England has a pretty decent youth academy set-up, yet it is true that we rarely produce silky-skilled geniuses. Rooney is hailed as much as he is because he seems to combine the stocky, powerful build that the Premiership seems to thrive on, with a whole load of unpredictable stuff and the ability to beat defenders. I think we have to face the fact that this is kind of rare for England.
There are a few signs it might be changing a bit - if Wright-Philips can restore his career, and if Lennon gets the chances he should at Tottenham. I think our academy system is extremely good at creating athletes, but not so hot at allowing free-form creativity. This is perhaps partly down to the training methods, which will presumably be preparing players for the generally physical demands of the Prem, rather than teaching them the ability to accurately dictate the tempo of a game or .. well .. just showboat a bit.
Just a bit of a theory. I shall now select my all-conquering Metro 11! (or possibly 12, or whatever the squad is)
