So... no World Cup thread yet? (also featuring TTLG fantasy world cup game) - by D'Arcy

That was seriously laffo. What WAS that free kick against the Paraguay goalkeeper for ... taking too many steps or something? The Gerrard thing was bizarre too - it was hardly a foul and he didn't give a free kick afterwards anyway! Maybe he was giving PSYCHIC DISSENT. Mr Ref seemed to be tossing a mental coin for whether Crouch either gained or gave away a foul too.
Then we had the subs, which were instantly entertaining. I felt it was nice of Sven to give Paraguay a fighting chance by gradually reverting to a 0-6-4 formation. In terms of football though, just awful.
Meanwhile, my fantasy defence are having a blinder:
Friedrich - played Wanchope onside for both Costa Rica goals yesterday
Gamarra - deftly flicked own goal inside four minutes
Krstajic - LOOK OUT, HOLLAND!

That second half was pretty appalling.
It's the worst I've saw England play, and I'm on the lookout for games when I can laugh at them.

Anyone see Andrew Flintoff's pissed up BBC interview before the game? Brilliant! :D
Awww cheersh pal, yer me best mate....
The second half preformance was just as shite as the last two tournaments against Brazil and Portugal. Back to square one then and with McLaren looking particularly dull and uninspiring in the background

Yes, it was a poor England performance, but you shouldn't really have expected anything else. England are notoriously slow starters in competitions; three points from the first match is something of a rarity.
Having said that, Paraguay didn't create any chances of note, and I got the distinct impression that the Mexican ref slightly favoured his Latin buddies (maybe he mistook Paraguay for Venezuela? God knows he'd need some MAJOR oil reserves to keep that greasy barnet in condition).
Three points against Trinidad & Tobago and we can look forward to some real performances against real teams! :thumb:

Oh please, the referee was a moron on both sides. The as far as I saw, the idiocy just happened to go in Paraguay's favour - probably because they had more of the ball to be fouled on ;)
For now, I have some real football to watch in the shape of Sweden then Argentina.
Side note: 2nd in the TTLG league, wahay.
D'Arcy on 10/6/2006 at 15:45
If he really wanted to favour his latin buddies he would have sent <strike>Paul Bez</strike> Peter Crouch, the amazing elbowing creature, off after he made a dangerous tackle when he was already booked ;)

Good to see D'Arcy keeping up the tradition of watching a different match to the rest of us

To be honest i thought we dealt with Paraguay just fine. First time i've seen England win their first tournament game in ages. And it was ruddy well hot out there.
Soooooo, back up your troubles in your old kit bag/my old man's a dustman etc etc...

I'm joking. The tackle I refer to was just as 'bad' as the one that gave Gerrard the booking. It would have been outrageous if Crouch had been booked as well. What I mean is that the referee was simply bad, and I don't think that he was out to favour his 'latin buddies'.
Crouch still reminds me of Paul Bez though. All he needs is the maracas :p

Damned Trinadad and Tobego ruining my fun  Once they brought Allback on as a striker and dropped Larsson to the midfield, they started getting more chances and Allback hit them all straight to the keeper. I can't tell whether my throat's killing me because of heigh fever or shouting at Allback...
And of course the commentators were wetting themselves with joy at the thought that England only need to win one game now to qualify.
The Argies had better win, I need a good result today.
